ALBUM REVIEW: Resignation – Karg
Austrian post-black metal outfit KARG never seem to stay quiet for too long, only recently releasing EP Resilienz in 2021 and full-length Traktat in 2020. The creative powerhouse is back once again with follow-up Resignation which is due for release on November 25th via AOP Records. How will this release stack up against their ridiculously consistent collection of works?
Was Bleibt instils a solemn, cinematic vibe, easing you into proceedings with subtle tones. As the momentum builds the master orchestrator known only as J.J unleashes his signature, emotive vocal outbursts which immediately elevate all they come into contact with. The graceful atmospherics are just pure escapism and stand tall against the abrasive elements. Before you know it 11 minutes have floated by in what feels like the blink of an eye.
EBBE//FLUT opens with an impassioned vocal expulsion accompanied by dramatic, jabbing guitar work. The intricate layering and diverse dynamics provide such an invigorating experience. Whether you are able to translate the lyrical narrative or not, there is so much raw emotion poured into every syllable that it is impossible not to be gripped. Emphatic drum sequences further enhance the unfolding soundscape.
Grab Der Wellen follows suit with another pulsating drumming performance. It is so effortless to become encapsulated by the immersive wealth of creativity being exhibited. Beauty, vibrancy, intensity, warmth – this track possesses it all in spades. Generation Ohne Abschied continues to unveil waves of alluring instrumentation at every turn. The levels of skill and polished execution are on par with any composer in the business.
Einen Traum Weiter Dort Fangen Wir Das Licht is the first of two bonus tracks, as KARG takes a stab at making an adaption of THE CRANBERRIES. Whilst containing the same initial blueprint it is almost unrecognisable from the original. It goes without saying that the vocals don’t quite possess the same elegance as the late great Dolores O’Riordan. Fieberherz on the other hand falls into a more comparable wheelhouse, originally written by shoegaze outfit NOTHING. Unless you have a particular affinity to the existing piece, this track may not particularly bring much enthusiasm.
Resignation is bursting with expert craftmanship and even if this is your first taste of KARG or you have insatiably digested all past works it never ceases to amaze. The bonus tracks don’t really bring much excitement to the table but there are still plenty of wondrous moments crammed into this effort. An impressive addition to an already mighty fine catalogue.
