ALBUM REVIEW: Attracted to Danger – The New Roses

German hard rockers, THE NEW ROSES, have put out their newest album Attracted to Danger. The record itself is meant to provide everything that the band loves and appreciate, and what they’ve become known for, which is catchy sounds, high energy and pure rock’n’roll anthems. And even for those going into this album blind, it can be collectively agreed that this is perfectly achieved.

Opening things up is the classic rock anthem When You Fall In Love, filled with energetic vocals and catchy lyrics that leave you feeling happy, accurately capturing the feelings one goes through in the title. Contrasted with the next song, Natural Born Vagabonds, while still leaving you with a sense of happiness, it’s of a more sentimental nature as the track starts out acoustically, feeling much like the vocals are that of an elder sitting down to tell the youths a story. The full band them comes in to help soundtrack the memories being reminisced, cherishing them despite the acknowledgement of the hardships they had to experience to get to where they are now.

While certainly a feel good listen, there is a moment where THE NEW ROSES fall into the trap of sounding same-y in that one might not realise that one song has finished and the next has started, so it sounds like one long track. Namely Four Wheels and Bring The Thunder.  Yet the remaining songs easily make up for that moment.

The main highlights of the album are the title track, that is energetic and leaves you feeling pumped, ready to face whatever challenges that will come your way in a way that feels like you’re the protagonist in a campy, fun 80s action flick; This Heart, that seemingly strays away from the classic rock and rock’n’roll genres, and experiments with moody alternative and, daresay, even mid-00s emo that reminds you of your teenage years; and Hold Me Up, another moodier track that one can imagine a crowd swaying with their lighters held high, that features Gill Montgomey (THE AMORETTES, THE HOT DAMN) whose stunning, powerful vocals beautifully compliment the track.

Maybe a little cliché yet Attracted to Danger is still a good listen, especially for when you need something to make you feel happy and motivated to face the day. Plus, you get to imagine yourself as the protagonist in your favourite action flick, What more could one want?
