ALBUM REVIEW: Bellum Regiis – Hate

Polish death metal bruisers HATE have been crafting their path of dominance for multiple decades, leaving many an imitator in their wake. Barely making a misstep in their storied career the quartet have blazed an impressive trail and have no intention of stopping. Album number thirteen, Bellum Regiis is due for release on May 2nd via Metal Blade Records and looks poised to be another feather in their already brimming cap.

Bellum Regiis quickly acquaints you with a ferocious wave of aggression. Formidable blast beats, bleak, blackened riffing, and powerful growls are immersed in a Greek mythological narrative. Iphigenia possesses a menacing stride, like it may dive for your throat at a moment’s notice. Fierce riff sequences are drenched in devilish harmonies. The Vanguard enters the fray accompanied by opulent orchestration that is soon disintegrated by crushing intensity. The hellish combination of unrelenting drum work and a swarming, rhythmic onslaught create a seismic impact.

A Ghost Of Lost Delight ominously creeps into view as a ponderous pacing proves to be just as vicious. Enticing venomous melodies lure you to your imminent demise. Rite Of Triglav offers a dramatic interlude that evokes images of the commencement of an epic battle which segues into the equally imposing Perun Rising. This track is particularly captivating as it ebbs and flows in dynamic fashion. The foreboding introduction sinisterly simmers away before gathering significant momentum.

Alfa Inferi Goddess Of War is dangerously addictive. A melodic shroud of darkness interwoven with a potent brutish nature engulfs your senses. This kind of adrenaline-fuelled anthem deserves to be unleashed on a live stage with skin-scorching flames bursting from every conceivable angle. Prophet Of Arkhen sustains the unrelenting mentality, bombarding you with a barrage of monstrous musicianship. Boisterous riff segments make you want to run headfirst through a brick wall. Ageless Harp Of Devilry also opts for the blunt force approach. Invigorating instrumentation ensures this effort departs in a fanfare of explosive glory.

HATE have forged a reputation for an impeccable level of consistency and this outing is no different. Bellum Regiis is packed with generous helpings of black metal-infused savagery that deserves to be played so loud that it rattles your skull. Arguably some tracks could be streamlined but the overall product, particularly towards the latter stages, is as devastating as ever.
