EP REVIEW: Exist vol ii – Lastelle
In 2024, post-hardcore band LASTELLE released Exist – vol i, a raw and honest EP that saw them propelled to new heights. Now they’re back with the second half of that project, Exist – vol. ii. The quintet are known for their lyrics which tackle with everything from grieving a loved one to struggles with neurodivergence. This new EP is no different, as the band tackle different topics across five songs, showcasing why they are one of the most exciting new bands in the scene.
The opening Exist is a mid-tempo guitar-driven song that sets the tone for the EP. The instruments are regulated to the background, allowing the vocals to be front and centre. Tired Eyes picks up the energy as there is an equal balance between the vocals and the instruments sharing the spotlight. There is a lot of singing on the EP, but there are also moments of heavy screaming.
Bitter Roots is a slow-paced interlude of a voicemail over synths that transitions into the penultimate song, Bitter Seeds, a heavy post-hardcore song that continues the synth backing track of the interlude. What is most impressive about this EP is how much it showcases the band’s talent in such a short amount of time. Some EPs end prematurely and others drag on, but LASTELLE hit the sweet spot.
Closing song The Silence Hurts The Most II is seven minutes and fifty seconds long. However, it doesn’t drag the EP down. It’s an accumulation of what makes the EP so brilliant, as it focuses on the heavier side of the band by having more screams, but there are still moments of singing as well. It is a well-crafted song that adds to the depth and complexity of the EP.
Overall, Exist – vol. ii is a worthy follow-up to a fantastic EP. It also stands on its own two feet. LASTELLE prove that they are in it for the long haul with this expertly crafted EP that doesn’t drop the ball throughout its runtime. This is quality over quantity as the band manage to keep things consistent within a short amount of songs. Furthermore, the EP’s pacing is brilliant as it doesn’t drag on for too long nor does it sound unfinished. LASTELLE are proudly leading the way for post-hardcore, and if you need a reason why, look no further than Exist – vol. ii.
