ALBUM REVIEW: Abyss – The Final Chapter – Annisokay
German metalcore band, ANNISOKAY, are back with their newest record Abyss – The Final Chapter. As the name suggests, the album is meant to act as a conclusion to their Abyss Part I and Abyss Pt II EPs, marking the end of an ambitious project that showed how far they can push boundaries within their music that one moment is atmospheric, the next a showcase of gnarly riffs. This record acts as a perfect summary and demonstration of what they do best.
Opening things up is the intro title track where we hear a build up of industrial synths with orchestral elements, setting the stage from something dramatic, and as that intensity reaches it’s peak we are greeted by metalcore instruments and low vocals. We barely have time to let what just happened sink in before we’re plunged headfirst into Human where, once again, we’re greeted by distorted noises that are then taken over the loud metalcore meets industrial sound. One thing you’ll take note of during this song, as well as the entire album, is how insane the production is where every track is alive and in your face. Even during songs that are, relatively, slower, not once are you bored as you sit rapt to attention. The loudness of Human is then concluded with a piano section, a slowed down version of the song that seems to summarise the themes of the song, that being of celebrating what makes us human.
Each song, if doing a brief synopsis, is some type of blend of electronic, industrial, and metalcore sounds, yet no song sounds the same. Whether is due to pace, composition, or just the overall style, each track has its own unique personality. Whether it’s bringing in nostalgic sounds, as heard in Ultraviolet which appears heavily inspired by early 00s nu-metal complete with electronic beats, melodic moments and even a rap section; creating vivid soundscapes as heard in Silent Anchor where the gritty atmosphere brings to mind images relating to a dystopian landscape and the survivors who rise from the ashes to create a better world; to moments of just pure energy as heard in songs like My Effigy and Oblivion where you can’t help but feel pumped and ready to jump into the nearest mosh pit.
What’s also satisfying is how ANNISOKAY goes to prove that metalcore doesn’t need to just be heavy and aggressive to sound good. Sure, there are plenty of loud tracks to enjoy, but there are also lighter moments heard that also standout, such as bringing in pop melodies during the otherwise industrial rock heavy Splinters, and Calamity that is electronic focused with catchy beats to hold your attention. Oh and if that hasn’t sold you, then maybe a solid collaboration with ANY GIVEN DAY on H.A.T.E. that is just breakdown galore might grab your attention. A solid record from a solid band.
Rating: 8/10
