ALBUM REVIEW: Respect The Hustle, I Won’t Be Your Dog Forever – Ronker
For those new to the juggernaut force of nature that is RONKER, the Belgian speed noise quartet are a frighteningly bold blend of post-punk, noise-rock and hardcore. Whether you proudly fly the flag for any of those camps or open to a gateway drug to the next, this sublime album proves they’re a cross-over band for the ages.
Fresh off the comedown of a pulverising debut, they fiercely pull the pin and revel in the arson that this sophomore album packs under the hood. By carelessly flirting with a palette of otherwise jarring genres, the album pulsates with a vigorous intensity that locks you into a half nelson of abrasive noise.
At times, the guitar playing is reminiscent of the loose twang of a post-punk tune in the vein of IDLES or VIAGRA BOYS. But as post-punk rears its head across the record, it subsequently gets decapitated by heavy drops and screeching vocals. The abrasive attitude of the record is bolstered by big hooks, face-melting riffs and a dense wall of sound. If you balance this with the opportunities for a cheeky two-step scattered throughout, the band are anything but stagnant in this deliciously rampant and urgent sonic foray.
But the real standout of the record is the vocals courtesy of Jasper De Petter who mercilessly squares up to the listener with a direct, grating and downright intimidating ferocity. The sweat, blood and fury he spits into the album is the petroleum that sets the madness ablaze. In a couple words, Jasper is entirely ungovernable and uncontrollable.
Whilst RONKER know how to blow your socks off, they also possess the nuance and sophistication to batter your conscience. Billed as a concept album exploring the coping mechanisms and antics of a rock & roll-lifestyle. Gems like Snuff shed light on the unforgiving and raw challenges that a rigorous yet tenacious touring lifestyle can bring. As this melancholic anthem builds to a devastating crescendo you can only watch on as it self-implodes on itself. RONKER show they aren’t just your average merchants of noise; they also have the vision and execution to lure you in even deeper.
If Snuff doesn’t convince you, jump to livelier and riff heavy Discodust and experience a brutal commentary of addiction. Regardless of what tempo you prefer, the band attack you from all angles.
Whilst first and foremost Jasper resembles a rampant devil dog, he is more than prepared to succumb to the power of fragility and vulnerability. With the backing of a chaotic yet purposeful band, we bare witness to the duality of RONKER. Whilst their debut set the foundations of a rough and ready in your face rock band, this follow up shows they are a serious force to be reckoned with.
