EP REVIEW: Subjected To A Partying – Party Cannon
PARTY CANNON are an individual art form. The slam metal loons have cultivated a hardcore following through playing as many places as they can, wacky inflatables and blowing impudent raspberries at pretty much everyone while chanting ‘Ner ner ne ner nerrrrrrr‘. They’re brilliant at what they do, mind, selling out venues up and down the country, and every now and then their collective IQ power (which, by their own admission, isn’t particularly great) comes up with a rather solid idea for new material, which is what you’ll find here on Subjected To A Partying, their brand new EP out on March 27th via Unique Leader Records.
The EP is split in two: the first half sees PARTY CANNON break their sound down into its four main components and then compose a track leaning towards each one; said components are slam metal, goregrind, early 2000’s brutal death metal, and New York death metal. Along the way, they naturally add their own silly soundbites to ensure nobody mistakes them for a serious band, like Thirst Trap ending its barrage of blast beats and pinch harmonics with the late, great Gilbert Gottfried reading 50 Shades Of Grey, but there’s enough groove in Parisian Bedbug and stomp in Improper Use Of A Speculum to ensure that people can still throw shapes amongst all the cartoonish humour.
The second half sees Thirst Trap and High Tariff Behaviour subject to remixes by friends of the band: KMAC2021 takes Thirst Trap and turns it into SHIKARI SOUND SYSTEM on steroids with a dash of happy hardcore and The Simpsons for good measure, while FRONTIERER’s version of the latter (renamed Low IQ Behaviour) sees the track take on a lo-fi style reminiscent of early PRODIGY and RITUAL STUDIO‘s remix of the same song (this time called High Tariff Overture) goes full on classical and grandiose. To round it all off, High Tariff Behaviour appears yet again in live form alongside Human Slime, both taken from the band’s ‘hometown’ show in Glasgow last year while opening for NEKROGOBLIKON, capturing the frenetic and chaotic energy of their shows surprisingly well.
If you’ve never experienced PARTY CANNON before, the first half works as a solid introduction to their various elements, but the rest might be lost on you. If you’re already a fan who’s fully committed to the cause, then you’re going to have a whale of the time with everything that’s present. Ultimately though, the band aren’t going to care one bit what anyone thinks – they’re just here to have a good time and stick a middle finger up to anyone and everyone who takes metal too seriously.
