ALBUM REVIEW: Melted On The Inch – Boss Keloid

Holy Roar Records are on a bit of a stormer right now with an unbelievable roster. Whether it be the monstrous CONJURER or the frantic ROLO TOMASSI, it covers a large scope of the alternative umbrella. It’s fair to say that no band on their roster absorbs and disperse eclectic musical influences quite like BOSS KELOID does, and they have gone even further down the KELOID path of creativity with their third album Melted On The Inch.

Where previously they stayed predominantly in the stoner metal end of the spectrum whilst allowing outside influences to seep on through, with Melted on The Inch, BOSS KELOID allow for six songs that are all as unique as the next and makes the full album a journey through the tapestry that makes up who the band are. Chronosiam opens the record and leads the record off which its sludgy foot first. The interlocking grooves that progress and develop throughout the song make for an interesting listen, and the rhythmic vocal delivery is simply the cherry on top of the cake. The following Tarku Shavel is a longer a more delicate approach for the most part, before the rumbling chorus providing the song with a great back bone.

The varying sounds in these two songs alone is enough to talk about, and it really is testament to just how much craftsmanship has gone into the album along with all the different musical nods. Pekruyve plays host to a reggae rattle in its open segment that grants it a further dimension but it also deepens the kink in the armour for this album. There are so many different inputs from the entire musical spectrum that the album does feel like a collection of short stories rather than a full novel. Each song has stand out moments but the album certainly feels top heavy with regards to the quality of the songs.

With only six chapters in this story, it does require every song to stand out, something the band take full advantage of. Moving onto the rolling and returning choruses of Jromliah, BOSS KELOID show their ability to ear wig their way into your memory with easy going melodies. With such varied sounds there is almost a no holds barred feel to what is thrown into the mix, and whilst the new synths that fill the gaps throughout the record work well, when they take centre stage on the opening of Lokannok it does feel somewhat out of place and takes the edge off the guitars with the swelling chords that continue.

The great and truly impressive thing about Melted on The Inch is that no matter what issue you may have, there is almost certainly a song for you within its ranks. Whilst it may not feel like a complete saga, the six short snippets of creative brilliance that makes up the 45 minute listen show BOSS KELOID to be one of the finest troupes of musical purveyors in all the land.
