PREMIERE: Don Frye – A Horse Called War
Distorted Sound is pleased to premiere the brand new song from A HORSE CALLED WAR!
The new song, titled Don Frye, is taken from the UK sludge metallers’ upcoming new EP Good For Glue (And Nothing Else) which is scheduled to be released in November this year.
Speaking about the new song, guitarist David Vickers tells us, “Don Frye was the last track written for the new EP. It was a conscious effort to write something on the slower side, because quite a bit of the stuff on Good For Glue (And Nothing Else) is at the more up tempo end of things for us. We started out just wanting to do something slow and nasty. It’s probably hard to believe because it sounds nothing them, but the inspiration for first riff actually came from AC/DC. I had a riff writing session where I sat down and listened to their most kick ass riffs and tried to soak up some inspiration. The second riff is actually my attempt at writing something that our other guitarist (Ryan, now left the band) might come up with, just for a bit of a laugh really.”

Continuing to talk about the track, Vickers continues, “the second half of the track has some of our favourite sections on the new EP, its where the track really starts to come alive and be it’s own thing. It’s angry, it’s pissed off, it’s loud, disgusting, pure filthy. Lyrically, there is no meaning. It’s like all of our stuff, Shane just screams and shouts the fuck out of them lungs. He just letting out whatever he needs to get out, it’s that simple. Every now and then there’s the odd phrase and line that you can make it, but it doesn’t mean anything, sometimes there are no real words. He’s just rambling, venting, doing what the tracks needs, letting off steam I guess. He just does his thing.
The name Don Frye came about after few too many beers and too many smokes, when Haydn, Cooper and Shane were talking about MMA and their love of it. They got on to the subject of this fighter, Don Frye who it turns out they all bloody love and I think after that, it was settled that it should be a track name as I way to pay homage. Also, we had a track named after a person on our last release (12 years ago!) so I thought it would be kind of cool to do the same again. You could say that Don Frye gruelling assault on the senses which takes you through nine rounds of knock out blows!!”
Good For Glue (And Nothing Else) is set for release on November 22nd via APF Records.
