EP REVIEW: Malfunction – Dead Posey
Many people are always trying new things, experimenting with sounds, pushing the envelope to what can be included in rock and metal. Some go back to basics, resemble the classic rock of the 1970s, others look to the 1990s, the era of grunge and industrial; all in all, trying to find something new to bring to the table. But how about mixing the 70’s and 90’s to deliver the music of 2020? That seems to be the plan from DEAD POSEY, a rock duo from Los Angeles, the band embody that Sunset Strip vibe in songs like Don’t Start The Devil and Freak Show, whilst also combining old school rock and industrial to bring something vibrant and exciting for the end of the 2010s and into the new decade. Whilst unexpected circumstances have delayed debuts at Download Festival, that hasn’t stopped the group from preparing their next EP, Malfunction. How does this one stand against Freak Show EP?
Very well – it almost seems like a perfect continuation from the previous EP. There’s a great blend of HALESTORM, DOROTHY, and NINE INCH NAILS inspired sounds that make it unique and exciting to hear. Firstly, Head of the Snake; dirty rock, very inventive layers with an excellent build to the chorus. It’s a strong open to start the EP, especially in the lyrical department. Next, Parasite is inventive theming lyrically, the music surrounding it adds to the power of the song, especially within the bass and guitar parts. Just a perfect addition to their musical roster.
Bad Things has a spooky atmosphere, quite dark and mysterious but it works really well, very powerful again, and an amazing sound that shows the true nature of the modern hard rock sound. Even with the addition of effects and sounds, there’s so much strength in the theme of “Bad Things always comes in threes”. Finally, Holly Roller has strong bass and drum rhythms with simple and effective riffs and great lyrics. The hard rock vibe is very strong here, and the song is a fantastic way to close out the album. It does leave you wanting more at the end, which means that only the best can come from these guys in the future.
Overall, Malfunction is a very strong EP, showcasing the best that this group has to offer in rock, combining their influences with some new ideas, as well as expanding upon what was set in their previous EP. This EP shows that DEAD POSEY is a band to watch in the future and that great things are expected whatever comes their way. The future is bright for DEAD POSEY and it’s one that will be very exciting to watch.
