Fight The Fight: The Journey Is Never The Same As You’d Expect

Norwegian high-powered metallers FIGHT THE FIGHT continue to prove the idea that persistence is key. Having been in a band together since school, they have continued to strive to create the music that they love. Their first self titled release received a great reception, introducing their listeners to their new and experimental sound, and having supported the likes of AVENGED SEVENFOLD and HATEBREED, they have already hit some milestones.

We spoke to Lord, guitarist for the band, “seeing all the positive responses we got on our debut album was a very welcoming surprise of course. We didn’t expect to get that much attention on our first album with a new band name.” The band is releasing their second album, Deliverance, on the September 18th this year, aiming to raise the bar even higher from their previous release. “We definitely knew we had to deliver on the upcoming album after the release of the first one. And to be honest I think we did, in my opinion Deliverance is a stronger album.”

The band has been said to have no boundaries stylistically so cannot really be pinned down to a particular genre, but when asked, Lord described the band’s sound as, “somewhere between a rock band and a modern metal hybrid.” He went on to say that by not labelling the band as one thing, it allowed for much more artistic creativity and freedom, ironically the title of their second album Deliverance meaning to be set free. “You can just sit down with your instrument and just play whatever you like, because when all the guys get together it will still sound like FIGHT THE FIGHT.”

The band members each have a separate persona for when they are performing in the band, giving them all an outlet to portray whatever they want to, and Lord spoke of how these influenced their new release. “On this album we wanted to emphasise our alter egos more than we did on the first album. So you can say this album is more about the characters Lars Vegas, Amok, Lord and HM. This is the music these characters would play.” Again, linking to the meaning of the title of this release, the band members wanted to set each of their persona’s personalities free, giving them a big impact on the outcome of this album. When asked if there were any ideas that the band had that they didn’t get to play around with on this album, Lord explained how he believed that they had accomplished everything they had wanted to for this release, yet they want to make sure that all their albums in the future have their own new sounds. “We are already well on the way writing songs for our third album and we are getting experimental with sounds we’ve never tried before. I think all our albums will be different experiences for our listeners.”

When it comes to other artists that influence FIGHT THE FIGHT, they take inspiration from a very broad array of musical styles and genres, “we basically listen to everything from EMINEM to MESHUGGAH” proving that you cannot put a label on this band as one minute you could be listening to something you could even hear on mainstream radio, but then they do a full 180 and throw something you weren’t expecting into the mix. Lord said that more modern bands like PERIPHERY, ARCHITECTS and PARKWAY DRIVE were an influence to him, but each member of the band has many different influences that they like to listen to.

Any successful artist probably didn’t know what path they were starting to go down when they first set off, and since FIGHT THE FIGHT have been together since school, this is certainly the case for them also. As the band has been together for this long period of time, it has obviously created a connection between them to the point where they understand each other’s visions for the music they want to create, resulting in albums that bursts with passion and many people will want to listen to. “I don’t know what we were expecting but I am really glad we are still playing together. Of course the journey is never the same way as you expect it to be, all I know is that we are not at our destination yet.”

Are there any particular songs from this album that stand out as a favourite of yours and for what reasons? 

Lord: I really like the end track Paradigm. It has lots of different musical elements to it that make it a really diverse song in my opinion.

Who would be your dream artist to open a show for? 

Lord: RAMMSTEIN

If you could choose any venue or event to play at where would you choose? 

Lord: Now that Wacken is off the bucket list I guess I would have to say the Royal Albert Hall in England. Such a beautiful venue.

Finally, what is one of your favourite experiences/memories from being in the band? 

Lord: I would have to say our first month long tour with SATYRICON in 2015. Just a bunch of kids on a night liner cruising through Europe playing metal shows and having fun. Hanging out with fans after shows and just checking out the world.
