ALBUM REVIEW: Caveman Logic – The Limit

What do you get when you form a super-group of musicians who all consisted of bands that founded and built the foundations of punk and doom? Well, you get THE LIMIT. Consisting of members from punk legends THE STOOGES, doom rock PENTAGRAM, NYC punk originators TESTORS and infamous metal band DAWNRIDER; this band are here to break down all the boundaries of heavy rock and show the world just how it’s done with their debut album Caveman Logic.

Kicking off the album with Kitty Gone, it’s an instant no-nonsense sound that whilst highlighting all of the different musical backgrounds each member comes from, there’s something fresh and unique buried underneath the dirty guitar tones.

This attitude continues throughout the rest of the album, proof that that defying the ordinary in music is in their DNA. Over Rover is an important track on the record for highlighting this, it’s got the true elements of punk all over it with filthy riffs and intense speed with Bobby Liebling (vocals, PENTAGRAM) giving his vocal performance of his career. Yet despite the heavy punk influence, there’s thick doom undertones that show how well the two can work hand in hand.

There are moments that just fall short to catch the immediate attention however. Songs such as Sir Lancelot and Enough’s Enough have the drive to be up there as fan-favourites with their memorable lyrics and catchy chorus’, but musically there’s a lack in power to really give them the punch they need to be as standout as the rest of their surrounding tracks. This isn’t necessarily to say that they’re bad, but it is a shame to see them be miss-able amongst the rest of the crowd, especially seeing as again, they showcase just how well the blend of backgrounds come together.

Not all is lost, and it’s a small thing to dwell on when you’re surrounded with other tracks on the album that really stand-out from the rest. Title-track Caveman Logic, Death Of My Soul and Black Sea are all three huge giants that hold the entire strength of the band in the centre of their sounds. Each member comes out individually more so throughout these three than any other on the album, and despite already knowing their unique styles, it just goes to show exactly what they’re bringing to this band and how their experiences have moulded them to be the great musicians we know them as today.

There’s always the argument that ‘rock is dead’ by big names within music, but what THE LIMIT have done is combined past and present to create something that proves that statement wrong. These pioneers have looked at how music was, and how it’s evolving and used both to their advantage to show that there’s positives in both. Not only that, each member has harnessed their own unique style and gone out of their comfort zones to feed off one another’s extensive experiences to create something so natural it’s a little startling. THE LIMIT and what they have delivered with Caveman Logic is exactly what will get the blood pumping in heavy rock fans, and with any luck we’ll be experience that primal punk attitude in venues soon.
