EP REVIEW: Don’t Think About It – Muttering

Indie rock newcomers MUTTERING, release their debut EP, Don’t Think About It, which explores the ever so present theme of our planet coming to an end at our own hands. The band has described this release affectionately as a collection of “Songs for the end of the world”, exploring ideas such as over population.

Opening track and single from the EP, Swim, is based around the idea of “Optimism amidst impending doom”.  The song opens with a lightly strummed guitar chord, which then quickly transitions into some faster paced guitars and drums. The vocals from Chaz Bush are then introduced, adding a calming tone to the song which kind of contradicts the overall tone of the lyrics. There are intermittent breaks throughout the song which add emphasis, but also act as breathing room in a pretty heavy topic. The guitars throughout this album have the classic indie tone to them, but still manage to be original, and compliment the vocals incredibly well.

The track Disquiet again begins with a slow strum of a guitar which is then developed when some light bass and drums are introduced. This song has no vocal sections so is fully instrumental, which is always nice to have in and EP or album, as it allows the instruments to take centre stage, but also gives the listeners some time for reflection.

Good Luck makes its mark by introducing the listener to quite a harsh guitar note which is then used intermittently throughout the rest of the song. This note creates a lot of impact but could be seen as quite jarring when paired with the calming tone of the vocals, which may have been an artistic choice to fit with the theme of the EP itself. The rest of the song flows really nicely and is a rather ironically calming song when considering the deep meaning of the lyrics. The track is finished with some impressive vocals and catchy melodies, making for an enjoyable piece.

Overall, this debut EP is going to stand MUTTERING in good stead for future releases, establishing their cool sound and meaningful lyricism. This release is an enjoyable listen, and has allowed the band to make their mark.
