ALBUM REVIEW: Are You In A Cult? – Dead Posey
Rock duo, Dead Posey, have put out their debut record Are You In A Cult?. The duo themselves are not ones to say silent and have confronted topics in their music in relation to sexism, oppression and religious dogma, all interlaced with the sounds of goth and punk, with a sprinkling to 80s pop synths and 90s alternative rock. If that hasn’t already sold you, then maybe a cover of NEW ORDER’s Blue Monday might interest you further.
One way to describe DEAD POSEY and their music is to imagine what a real-life version of The Hex Girls might sound like, and trust us, that’s a glowing commendation. This comparison is easy to make across the entire album, yet it’s most obvious with opening track Zombies that starts out with dark 80s pop synths before metal instruments kick off and we are treated to something fun, fast, and incredible, completed with growls that ties the song together.
Moving into She Went Bad, this is when industrial and goth rock come into play with a style that answers the question of what would happen if MOTIONLESS IN WHITE did a collaboration with a vocalist like Lzzy Hale or Taylor Momsen.
What further solidifies how incredible this record is with how every track leaves you excited and eager to hear more. There are songs that leave you with a sense of motivation and energy to face those who may have wronged you, as seen on Darkside, Russian Roulette and their stunning cover of Blue Monday.
Yet on the flipside, whilst staying true to their style of being dramatic, fun and energetic, they are not afraid to discuss serious topics. Welcome to The Nightmare, that is like that of CREEPER and, more specifically, also reminds you of BAMBIE THUG’s Doomsday Blue, is an industrial meets goth rock track that appears to act as a commentary of the political climate within modern day American politics. Or Scar, which is the only song on the record that cannot be described as fun, tackles the topic of mental health and when you find yourself at your lowest point, done in a way that feels all too real.
An incredible debut album from a duo who are only just getting started. DEAD POSEY are a band to be excited about and one that we cannot wait to hear more from in the future.
Rating: 9/10
