ALBUM REVIEW: Dancing Into Oblivion – White Stones

Martin Mendez is a man who needs little introduction, his work throughout his extensive tenure in OPETH speaks for itself and his most recent project WHITE STONES was given the honour of being the first ever Spanish band to sign for Nuclear Blast Records. Their impressive debut album Kuarahy instantly propelled them into the spotlight and their freshly released follow-up Dancing Into Oblivion is hoping to elevate them even further.

La Menace immediately instils a tense, unsettling atmosphere that feels like it will strike at any moment before transitioning into the swift drum beats and high energy instrumentation of New Age Of Dark. The grisly growls of vocalist Eloi Boucherie provide quite an evocative narrative as the song traverses through its dark, haunting chapters. Chain Of Command possesses an unconventional but fascinating tempo and pacing that is laced with enticing grooves. The heavy-hitting, ebb and flow is particularly intoxicating, combine that with some scintillating lead work and it proves exactly why this was chosen as one of the frontrunners for the release.

Iron Titans also embraces the endearing eccentricity with some flamboyant bass lines and a relaxed, gentle nature. As the track progresses the intensity begins to swell with volleys of impactful drumming and proficient riff work amongst various shifts in technicality as the band showcase their instrumental acumen.

Woven Dream offers up some tranquil tones as a palate cleanser of sorts before the next round. To Lie or to Die combines chilling, whispered vocals with punchy bass lines. This soon descends into a wave of aggression that veers into the more extreme side of the spectrum with skull rattling blast beats. Freedom in Captivity displays a softer, smoother side to WHITE STONES with peaceful, accessible melodies that whisk you away with ease. Just as you are being lulled into a sense of serenity you are greeted with a powerful growl and additional maniacal musicianship.

Acacia allows for a brief moment of contemplation, to comprehend what has unfolded throughout the course of this release before departing in a calming fashion.

Dancing Into Oblivion is packed full of experimentation and diversity which keeps your interest piqued for the duration. WHITE STONES have confidently displayed that they are just as happy floating above the clouds as they are with getting their hands dirty in the gritty darkness and have constructed a very well balanced offering. Long may it continue!
