ALBUM REVIEW: Der Brauch – The Hirsch Effekt

THE HIRSCH EFFEKT may not have achieved the same acclaim as some of their genre counterparts, but they have continued to fearlessly follow their own path, acquiring a fiercely loyal fan base along the way. 2023’s Urian continued to build upon their remarkably consistent catalogue and seventh studio album Der Brauch, which is due for release on January 30th via Long Branch Records, looks to push the envelope even further.

Der Brauch eases us in with a calming, acoustic introductory segment. Discordant heaviness works its way into the mix as the passionate lyrical passages leave their emotive stamp. Der Faden possesses a haunting, ethereal tone accompanied by dextrous instrumentation. The expansive layering effortlessly slots into place, adding an enthralling theatricality to proceedings. Das Seil is as enticing as it is jarring. THE HIRSCH EFFEKT flex their innovative artistry as this track progresses, expertly navigating quirky yet alluring tonal shifts.

Brauch Reprise provides a charming interlude accompanied by birdsong, offering a brief pocket of escapism before transitioning into the bright textures of Der Doppelgänger. Powerful surges meet immersive escapism as a graceful choir gently drifts through the soundscape. A frenetic chaos looms over the track towards the latter stages, instilling a wave of intensity to get your blood pumping. Die Lüge opts for a lingering, ominous approach. Another powerful vocal performance combines with dramatic spikes in energy to keep you on your toes. Die Brücke commences with emphatic drum beats amongst colourful swathes of melody. This track is packed full of an embracing vibrancy that you cannot help but allow to glide through your veins.

Das Nachsehen takes a tense turn. Unnerving synths hover around the periphery as its enthralling nature firmly tightens its grip. Explosive grooves and aggressive growls infuse a formidable swagger. Die Heimkehr returns to a more delicate demeanour. Additional impressive intricacies flourish, bringing this release to a satisfying, cleansing conclusion.

THE HIRSCH EFFEKT have admitted to suffering a crisis of confidence due to the stalling effects of the pandemic, but like most talented artists, they have thrived in the face of adversity. Der Brauch traverses through a plethora of moods, tones and emotions to culminate in potentially their strongest release to date. Their will to experiment and disregard boundaries has resulted in another collection of expertly crafted brilliance to add to their already stunning repertoire.
