ALBUM REVIEW: Eon Of Obscenity – Stabbing

Texas death metal killing squad STABBING return with a vengeance on their brand new album Eon Of Obscenity, their first on new label Century Media. Throughout this death metal opus, it is very apparent that the band are out to make an impact, and they do this both effortlessly and with enough brutality to make your head explode.

This is fearsome stuff and true to their name, STABBING go for the violent approach to sonic extremity with aplomb, carving new strands of heaviness with every track that emits from the speakers and sound effortless in doing so. Each track here explodes with same violet fury as a blade piercing flesh, and does so with the same bloodthirsty edge.

From the breakneck start of opening track Rotting Eternal onwards, it is clear that STABBING are back to make that impact with a collection of pummelling death metal anthems and throughout the record, they make that impact count with none more vicious results and the results are stunning.

STABBING vocalist Bridget Lynch is in suitably fine form as she tears through a series of impressive guttural roars with ease, demonstrating an impressive range of brutality. As the different songs move on, several jaw dropping moments stand out, with the truly inhuman vocals on the albums penultimate track Symphony Of Absurdity and album closer Sinking Into Catatonic Reality particularly standing out.

The rest of the members of STABBING in bassist Matt Day, drummer Aron Hetsko and guitarist Marvin Ruiz are on the same kind of form, which that tells you exactly how much of a force to be reckoned with the rest of the band. With the primal grooves, pummelling returns, and Hetsko’s machine gun drumming all amped up to the max on Eon Of Obscenity, sonically it sounds sublime.

Highlights abound throughout the album with the venomous Reborn To Kill Once More shining with its heaviness and brutal creativity and the way that particular song fades out so brilliantly and segues into the equally as brilliant instrumental Ruminations is a great thing to behold. Nauseating Composition features a guest appearance from a death metal stalwart in the form of the unmistakable vocals of SUFFOCATION‘s Ricky Meyers and it adds another dimension to the intensity that STABBING create throughout this sonic maelstrom, and it is in that intensity that this album excels in.

Even though it is only the start of the year, STABBING have made a very bold statement with Eon Of Obscenity and even though there is a long way to go until the end of the year, there is no doubt that it will be up there when it comes to the most brutal, creative and downright violent death metal albums of this, and indeed any year. It has to be said that the future of death metal is in very safe hands in the form of STABBING
