ALBUM REVIEW: Evil, Hate Filled Female – Delilah Bon
Brat-punk artist DELILAH BON has just put out her latest album Evil, Hate Filled Female. With its title inspired by online hate in response to her outspoken lyrics, Bon makes it clear that she is not going to stay quiet. The album itself focuses on social issues regarding feminism, LGBTQ, and prejudice, all told through Bon’s tongue in cheek, unapologetic style whilst also bringing in some theatrics with the voices of different characters.
As a fun introduction, the album opens with Hey World, which takes on a dark comedic voice regarding Bon’s experiences of growing up and being involved in the music industry where she felt unwanted, unheard and mocked by her peers. Whilst sounding relatively tame, instrumental wise, things go in a completely different direction with Maverick that kicks off the nu-metal meets rap sound that Bon has become known for online. The track itself almost acts like a sequel to the first track where now she just doesn’t care what others have to say about her or her music, and instead she speaks about her self-confidence in who she is. And you know what? You feel powerful yourself when you hear it.
Whilst on the surface things sound relatively light-hearted and brash in Evil, Hate Filled Female‘s lyrical content, DELILAH BON is not afraid to talk about serious issues that she has experienced and witnessed both through the music industry and in everyday life whilst existing as a queer woman – experiences that, sadly, many of us are all too familiar with. For example, The Internet comments on the hypocrisy of those willing to demonise the LGBTQ community and accuse them of harming others, yet when it comes to things that genuinely cause harm, they remain silent; and Epstein which, as the name suggests, calls out billionaires and those in power who take advantage of those who are vulnerable, while also criticising victim blaming.
The main theme explored in the record is how simply existing as a woman who decides to speak up is met with such a visceral reaction. The one message that Bon wants us to take away from Evil, Hate Filled Female is that you should never be afraid to stand for what is right, and if you’re causing such a reaction from, mostly, men online then it’s likely you’re succeeding in your goal. And actually, it’s quite funny and rather pathetic how upset these people can get, yet they will still try to hit on you as pointed out in I Am The Best (Just Ask Your Momma).
DELILAH BON is an unstoppable force in the world of modern-day rock; it’s no wonder so many people are afraid of her.
Rating: 9/10
