ALBUM REVIEW: Explosions – Three Days Grace

Over the years Canadian rock outfit THREE DAYS GRACE have confidently proved that there is far more to their creative offering than “that one song”. 2018’s Outsider allowed vocalist Matt Walst to firmly settle in his place amongst the ranks, and Explosions is prepared to further display the talent this bunch have.

So Called Life bursts open like a powder keg full of energy and aggression. It’s little wonder this song was chosen to become the front-running single, the chorus is massive and ridiculously addictive, and who wouldn’t want to put a chainsaw through a wall? I Am The Weapon keeps the infectious hooks flowing freely but introduces a more melodic approach. The punchy beat and lyrical delivery definitely have the stage in mind. Neurotic possesses a gritty, industrial vibe which is particularly accessible. The emotive tones will surely strike a relatable chord with many listeners. Lifetime is dedicated to the people of Mayfield, Kentucky who unfortunately were hit by a tornado back in 2021. The sombre, contemplative demeanour is also incredibly resonant.

Scar Is Born revisits the darker, heavier elements with powerful riff sequences. Whilst the chorus rhythm sounds remarkably like a previous track from their back catalogue, it is still effectively executed. Souvenirs ebbs and flows through varying moods to keep you engaged. You’re never quite sure where the track will journey to next. No Tomorrow instils an inviting tempo that is easily digestible and will have your head bobbing along to the beat. Redemption ventures down a cleaner, more melancholic path with its subtle but dramatic nature that draws you in.

Heart Of A Champion does its utmost to create an anthemic moment but begins to wear thin after multiple chorus cycles. Chain Of Abuse hits hard with its bleak, stark subject matter. For anyone going through a rather tough time in their life, this will provide a window of solace to help heal your heart. Someone To Talk To follows in suit by using piano segments to great effect, amplifying the intended tone. After that emotional journey Explosions plans to serve up some uplifting vibes, with its motivational sentiments making for a fitting departing track.

One thing is for sure, THREE DAYS GRACE know how to reel off a tonne of crowd pleasers. The only issue is that the high-energy floor fillers are all crammed into the front end and this allows for the injected adrenaline to wain and dissipate as Explosions progresses. Whilst the emotional topics entailed in the latter stages will be welcomed by many listeners, the song placement doesn’t quite leave you with that euphoric, excited rush which was built up in the early going. Despite any qualms with sequencing there is still a lot to appreciate and enjoy within this release and it should still be considered a triumph.
