ALBUM REVIEW: Godless Truth – Godless Truth
It is safe to say that few bands have a smooth run throughout their career, always encountering a few obstacles to navigate. How about founding member Petr Švancara ejecting the rest of the band and recruiting an entirely different line-up? This self-titled effort via Transcending Obscurity Records will be the first full-length release for GODLESS TRUTH in a massive 18 years, and on March 4th the wait will finally be over. Will the Czechs be able to bridge that pretty sizeable gap?
Wheels Of Entity opens up this album with a mesmerising yet soothing intro that charges straight into the rapid fire intensity of The Decision. Packed full of blistering hooks, this is one definitive method of grabbing your listener’s attention. Searing screams and potent drum work topped off with a slick solo run ensure this piece is the full package. This track really sets the bench high and gets you hyped for what is to come. Glory To Desperation offers up another short but inviting segment that is littered with polished lead work that neatly tees up the riff frenzy of Scissors. Crisp blast beats cut through the mix like a chainsaw through butter. The tempo shifts provide an exciting, unpredictable quality, never allowing any level of complacency to set in.
Breathe Fire keeps the energy levels at optimum efficiency with sharp vocal assaults that cover both ends of the register alongside formidable riff work that packs enough punch to make a brick wall crumble in its wake. Fortune Time surges forth with hefty bass lines and additional crushing drum beats that refuse to play second fiddle. Jabbing guitar work enhances the aggressive tone on display. The kick drums which dominate the opening moments of Bred In Greed are almost hypnotic in their delivery, bringing a lot of commanding grooves to the table. This track really lets the technical flair of the band run riot with razor sharp precision, allowing the listener to contemplate how DEATH may have sounded if Chuck‘s life wasn’t cut so devastatingly short.
The Eyechain follows suit with further pummelling drum elements joining forces with swift riff work. The exhilarating rhythms and adrenaline fuelled lead work are a joy to behold. RIP Cage hits the turbo button once more, poised to mow down anything which dares to contend with its vicious pace. The beautiful piece of piano work during the closing stages is the icing on the cake. Wake Up To Obey has every intention of beating every remaining cell in your body to a mere pile of dust by the time it is finished with you. Crushing ferocity combines with insane flourishes of sweeping in a chaotic wave of death metal mastery.
In this technologically advanced age, a lot of technical death metal has fell victim to so much digital tinkering that it has extracted the soul and passion from the music. Thankfully this is far from the case with GODLESS TRUTH. The raw energy is evident throughout and the exceptional musicianship ensures the standard doesn’t flicker for even a moment. The gauntlet has been laid down and 2022 has its work cut out if it wants to contend with this beast.
