ALBUM REVIEW: HissThroughRottenTeeth – Mélancolia
Given their track record, it comes as little surprise that Australia is continuing to conceive a ridiculously consistent level of output, firmly putting its stamp on the map of metal. Next to throw their hat in the ring are deathcore upstarts MÉLANCOLIA who are looking to turn heads with their upcoming debut effort entitled HissThroughRottenTeeth. The wait is almost over as this beast will be released from its cage on April 21st via Nuclear Blast Records and it is poised to become a firm favourite amongst the ranks of an already stacked 2023.
Horror_Ethereal encapsulates you in a harrowing soundscape full of dissonance and unnerving tones. Caustic screams burrow their way through your ear drums like a buzzsaw as potent drumming proves to be an equally destructive companion. Dread Will Follow dishes out some maniacally seductive riffing, luring you to your doom. The crushing intensity will have you quivering in fear. GOD TONGUE keeps the momentum in full flow with an abundance of aggressive bursts. Monstrous grooves join forces with bludgeoning drum passages.
When Shovels Drag On Concrete ramps up the savagery with ferocious rounds of blast beats out of the gate. Formidable shredding and bewildering vocal onslaughts leave you clambering for shelter from the unforgiving storm. The Hands That Tied The Noose opts for a haunting melodic approach whilst still retaining its sharp bite. Enticing hooks are plentifully scattered amongst the darkness. [Inure] was a no brainer to choose as a front running single as its devilish vibrancy is so intoxicating. The narrative and delivery are also thoroughly captivating – this will undoubtedly be the track that grabs the spotlight.
HissThroughRottenTeeth exhibits that slow and unhinged is just as powerful as foot to the floor ferocity. The combination of jarring instrumentation and emphatic atmospherics is particularly volatile. …a cold static eulogy follows suit, assaulting your senses with a distinct viciousness as it slickly shifts between tempos for an impressive final salvo that leaves a lasting impression.
Deathcore is arguably one of the most saturated genres in metal with most of its signature traits and characteristics already being replicated…well… to death. Thankfully MÉLANCOLIA have cleverly avoided that trap by bringing a wealth of variety and creativity to the table. HissThroughRottenTeeth possesses a heap of explosive content which will certainly grab your attention and have you coming back for more. Hopefully this is the beginning of a bright and fruitful future.
