ALBUM REVIEW: Impossible World – Filth Is Eternal
Seattle rock band, FILTH IS ETERNAL, are back with their newest record, Impossible World. The quartet have become known over the years for their heavier take on the punk genre that they use to explore darker themes such as unchecked technology and the slow rise of authoritarianism. They’re here to ask the hard questions about humanity, survival and trying to resist the way that the world is being shaped today, all told through a hardcore, yet melodic, version of punk music. Or, in much simpler terms, they have created something that sounds incredible and will stay with you long after your first listen.
Opening the record we have Stay Melted where the first thing we hear is a rough punk production, complete with elements that capture a raw performance. What makes it more interesting is the blend of other genres including drone rock, alternative and grunge, nicely tied together is echoey-styled vocals that elevate the song to a whole new level. This same sort of style carries on for the next few tracks with Long Way and Hellfire, both of which have incredible moments with the guitar which also includes a rock ‘n’ roll solo heard on the latter track. And then Acetylene is a track that is meant to be heard live.
This record is also home to three collaborations. Desire, featuring Gina Gleason (BARONESS), and Total War, featuring Johnny Whitney (BLOOD BROTHERS), are both short but sweet punk tracks that are hard to resist head-banging along to with both vocalists working beautifully into each song. Meanwhile So Below features the talents of Joe Trohman of FALL OUT BOY, where things start out with the sound of car engine revving before kicking off into a heavy rock meets punk sound with vocals shifting back and forth between a clean and rough production, the latter of which being how the instrumentals sound throughout, as is on par with most punk records.
Another thing that stands out, and deserves all the praise, are the vocals from front woman Lis DiAngelo that adapt seamlessly throughout the album regardless of overall genre influence. From classic punk vocals, echoey harmonies that give songs, including the aforementioned Stay Melted, a whole new level of awe, and even some more melodic moments as heard of Weather & Rose where, having first starting out, with fast and heavier punk sounds that are consistent across the entire album, we experience a sudden shift into a more smooth production that is the very definition of stunning.
FILTH IS ETERNAL are an exciting force to be reckoned with. They are loud and here to stay firmly within the modern rock scene, and one easily poised to become an important name in years to come. Nothing more needs to be said.
