ALBUM REVIEW: Infinite Peaks – The Cosmic Dead
Glasgow audio cosmonauts THE COSMIC DEAD return triumphantly with Infinite Peaks and in the same tradition as the band’s previous work this is an album that will take you on a vast journey through sound, space and beyond. THE COMISC DEAD are back and ready to blast off again.
Infinite Peaks consists of two tracks – Navigator #9 and Space Mountain – that are each split into three parts and the results are both majestic and mind-blowing. From start to finish, this is an impressive collection of mind-bending music; each part of Infinite Peaks is like an actual separate album, with the separate pieces of music conjuring up images of a vast astral plane from the get go, and it will take you as far away as you want go with its limitless sounds.
The Navigator #9 (Part 1 – Megalith, Part II – Rumination and Part III – Infinite Peaks) starts the whole journey off with the hazy Megalith kicking things off with an initially blissed out vibe that grows and grows to an impressive crescendo before Rumination amps things up even more with its laidback feeling. The title track finishes this first section off perfectly and segues nicely into Space Mountain (Part I – Desert Djilo, Part II – High Country and Part III – Last Ride Out).
Desert Djilo initially acts as a more sombre foil to what has gone on previously but soon morphs into to something akin to an exploding sun with just as fantastical results. High Country is even more frenetic in the best way possible, before Last Ride Out concludes things in style with its sublimely blissful nature.
Another notable element of the music of Infinite Peaks is the amount of twists and turns that the music takes contained within and this is much more than your average sonic platter, which results in a complete and utterly comprehensive listening experience that you will want to let consume you over and over again. Even though there are so many of those peaks and troughs sonically, the whole thing comes together in a cohesive manner and in epic fashion.
Infinite Peaks is a record that is aptly named as the music hits all different pinnacles throughout its duration and all of them hit the summit with pinpoint accuracy. This is not an album you just dip in and out of – you need to fully immerse yourself in it to truly appreciate its genius and beauty. With this record, THE COSMIC DEAD have excelled again and delivered an album of a world set to the most celestial music that you will want to explore time and time again – such is its grace, majesty and tripped-out vibe.
