ALBUM REVIEW: Neck-Deep In The Blyth – Eat Your Own Head
With a band name as provocative and striking as EAT YOUR OWN HEAD, you’ve got to have the confidence and skill to back up this choice. Luckily the Norwich-based outfit are more than prepared to back up such a statement. Their debut album entitled Neck-Deep In The Blyth is due to be released on May 20th via Drongo Records and it will certainly be turning a few heads!
Come Undone eases you in with calm, subtle melodies and smooth vocal lines that begin to build in vigour as the track elapses. Swift drum patterns instil an unpredictable tempo that bursts into life at a moment’s notice. Bullets ushers in some intricate lead work to slickly coincide with the energetic lyrical delivery. EAT YOUR OWN HEAD give a glimpse of their more devilish side with sharp, snappy instrumentation. Pig throws some hefty hooks into the mix, allowing for an alluring rhythmic beat to take hold. As momentum gathers this mostly instrumental piece descends into a wild volley of intensity.
Winter Takes Its Toll focuses more on emotive escapism with its floaty atmospherics. The track ebbs and flows seamlessly in complexity, keeping you on your toes as the passionate tone shines through. Poltergeist has a rather eccentric yet infectious flow that grabs your attention. The darker, more ominous vibe which lurks in the periphery possesses an air of uncertainty; when you least expect it, it starts to bare its vicious teeth. Malice Practice settles your heart rate with crisp, clean guitar work before surging right back into the thick of the action in explosive fashion. Denied offers up another quirky beat for you to instantly fall head over heels for. The variety of moods proves to be particularly endearing, as crazed as some may seem.
The Concrete Of Moulded Men harbours a dramatic, tense swagger. Impressive drum flourishes combine with a powerful vocal performance and plentiful grooves. Poison takes you on quite the journey. It ranges from relaxing jazz sections right through to vibrant progressive waves with raw aggression sprinkled in for good measure. Sit back and let it consume your ears. Ankh keeps the creative juices bursting out of every orifice. Addictive tempo shifts, softer, mellow elements and upbeat instrumentation all rolled up into one unpredictable ball of audible glory.
Neck-Deep In The Blyth is quite the wildcard, leaping and bounding through a variety of styles and tones with no end of confidence. This approach makes it an exhilarating assortment of sensations that has boundless replayability as you try to wrap your head around it. EAT YOUR OWN HEAD have evidently poured a lot of imagination and inventiveness into this release and it has paid off emphatically.
