ALBUM REVIEW: No Weather, No Cry, The Desert Doesn’t Lie – Diplomatic Immunity
Danish alternative rock band DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY have finally released their debut album No Weather, No Cry, The Desert Doesn’t Lie, following a series of successful singles and EPs. The band themselves view this release as an example of how far their songwriting has matured, with topics covering events and moments in each member’s life, with a reminder that no matter how dark things become there’s always that glimmer of hope in the distance.
That hope is what makes this album stand out and what washes over you as you listen to it; it’s hard not to come out the other side feeling blissfully happy in that everything will be alright in the end. It’s evident that we are in for a fun journey from the moment the opening track My House begins with a dramatic choir of voices and guitar that then takes off into an energetic track, nicely tied together with a catchy chorus and hook.
What we have here is an album full of anthemic songs that will get you bopping along, smiling and ready to face the day ahead. Even in moments when the record shifts into something more moody you can’t help but feel pumped, such as in Safeword which is a melancholic yet anthemic track, and Mama that has an alternative sound that gradually intensifies to the point that you expect a breakdown which never comes. Instead, it brings in gentle drums and acoustic guitar, and its contrast of standard and acoustic instruments is lovely to listen to.
Possibly the main highlight would have to be Both Eyes Open which is an alternative rock track that features – wait for it – bongos. Yes, you heard that right, bongos. It feels odd and like it shouldn’t work, but somehow it does?! It really does?! To add more intrigue to this, the track also has a chorus that draws heavy comparison to OASIS with its anthemic harmony and style. So, imagine if OASIS experimented with bongos occasionally, and you get the picture. If that doesn’t pique your interest, we don’t know what will.
Moving on from that odd tangent, what is guaranteed here is a set of anthemic singalong tracks galore that nicely remind you that, despite the hardships you may go through, everything will be alright in the end. It’s hard to not have fun when listening to No Weather, No Cry, The Desert Doesn’t Lie; it’s a strong start for DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY and we look forward to more.
