ALBUM REVIEW: Overdrive – Breathe Atlantis
Metalcore outfit BREATHE ATLANTIS have continued to impress as they have progressed throughout their career. Acquiring shows with the likes of SUM 41, BURY TOMORROW and CROSSFAITH show they aren’t a band to be taken lightly. Their latest release Overdrive is out now via Arising Empire and is poised to make quite the statement.
Break The Silence doesn’t mess about, getting stuck straight into meaty hooks and powerful melodies. The vibrancy and bouncy energy are a great way to kick off this release. Overdrive continues the enthusiastic pacing with pulsing drums and piercing screams. The infectious chorus gets ingrained in your eardrums. The hefty breakdown which surges forward towards the latter stages adds a particularly emphatic moment. Savior possesses a dramatic and evocative narrative that a lot of listeners will be able to relate to. The orchestral elements are an effective touch and enhance the overall mood of the piece.
Earthquake possesses an upbeat, punchy vibe that is bolstered by the impactful drum work on show. The slick transitions between clean and aggressive vocal styles helps to add a touch of variety. Dead And Gone comes hurtling in like a speeding bullet, displaying an addictive beat that could prove to be the ideal live anthem. The sharp bursts of energy will be a surefire way to whip a crowd into a frenzy. Heavy Hearts exhibits a dark yet poignant soundscape that is packed with emotive tones. Crunchy riffs and rage-fuelled vocal segments keep the adrenaline flowing.
Changes sustains the intensity with another round of stomping instrumentation that strongly urges you to bop your head along to the rhythm. Another impressive chorus line follows, the smooth vocal work has a fragile yet soothing quality. Gates Of Hell offers up another passionate outing that twists and turns through varying tones. There is an abundance of frenetic riffing to sink your teeth into. The snappy, prominent bass lines lead the way for Out There, the chorus also does a great job of filling your veins with that euphoric sensation. Going Down has the unenviable task of closing this release but is poised for the challenge. The momentum continues to flow and whilst the track doesn’t pack quite the vigour that some of its counterparts has, it still provides a solid track full of effective melodies.
Overdrive doesn’t particularly break new ground as far as the genre is concerned but there is an impressive sense of cohesion and a high level of quality which shines through. BREATHE ATLANTIS certainly know how to write a catchy hook and build enticing tracks brimming with confidence. There is enough variety held within this offering that stops it from becoming too safe or predictable and surely be well received to any previous listeners.
