ALBUM REVIEW: Phoenix – The Gems
Rising Swedish rock trio, THE GEMS, have put out their debut album Phoenix. The album title is appropriate given the circumstances in that band members come from rock band THUNDERMOTHER, meaning that they are rising from the ashes. Their aim is to have this album be everything that a classic rock fan would want, whilst also bringing in new fans of the genre. Essentially, if you want some good old rock n’ roll, then you’ve come to the right place.
As we open with intro track Aurora, the first thing we hear is the sound of lightening that is then joined by drums that represent the thunder. We are then treated to a powerful melody and vocals to match that you can help but be taken aback by. The droning guitar at the end then blends into the first full track, Queens, that then kicks off into a bouncy rock n’ roll song that is as nostalgic as it is modern, further complimented by its empowering atmosphere.
You can’t deny the chemistry and talent that each member has, with lead vocalist, Guernica Mancini, being easily compared to the likes of HALESTORM‘s Lzzy Hale. There is not one moment on the record that you could complain about, each song is filled with solid rock riffs, empowering lyrics and will you the confidence to have you strutting down the street ready for anything.
Trying to choose specific moments that stand out is difficult but having to choose would include, but not be limited to; Send Me To The Wolves, that is just so damn cool and badass sounding with a catchy hook, anthemic lyrics and a solid guitar solo; Silver Tongue a fast, fun track that, along with sounding cool, would be perfectly suited in the sequence of an action film where the protagonists get ready for the final showdown; and Undiscovered Paths that features a synth rock intro, with anthemic lyrics that leave you feeling pumped and read to start a fight. What you fight is up to you, but you ready to regardless.
What also stands out is the two interlude songs featured that go in a different direction in comparison to earlier mentioned tracks. Maria’s Song has beautiful violins feels quite powerful, and Renaissance which uses echoes and synths that are ethereal in nature.
All else that can be said is that Phoenix is a solid rock record full of tracks that hardly slow down and leave you ready to face anything. You couldn’t ask for more.
