ALBUM REVIEW: Prophecy – GosT
There is a pivotal scene in Paul Verhoeven‘s 1987 classic sci-fi film RoboCop where the metallic hero apprehends a high ranking member of the main antagonists criminal gang in a nightclub that full of futuristic cyberpunk clubgoers while an aggressive electronic song blares out at a deafening volume. That song is Show Me Your Spine by PTP (who feature members of MINISTRY and SKINNY PUPPY) and adds a perfect sonic encapsulation of the dystopian feel of the movie. That scene in particular is part of a film, as well as other similarly seminal classics like Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner, and how they use music have always reminded us of how the dark electronic music’s movement is so sonically exhilarating, and visually stunning.
Nowadays, you could take out the PTP track out and easily replace it with a track by dreamwave/darkwave/call it what you want. This is dark electronic music with a love for metal at its core, and maverick GOST would have the same startling effect, such is the powerful nature of the music that he makes and the dystopian nature of the music makes it sound timeless as it represents a futuristic style.
Over the past decade, GOST has been prolific with his music, creating a multitude of releases that showcase that darker side of electronic music with a sound that has appealed to both metalheads and ravers alike and now, having signed to Metal Blade Records, has unleashed his best album yet in Prophecy.
Unrelenting from beginning to end, Prophecy mixes throbbing electronic beats, hazy and dreamlike soundscapes and harsh metal elements to create an album that will ignite dancefloors and blow minds all year.
From the eerie opening introduction of Judgment to the pounding electronic majesty of Death In Bloom and Temple Of Tears, or the black metal assault of the album’s title track and Through The Water, or take the slow crawl of Deciever, this is an album that will keep you hooked all the way through, as long as you can take the darkness in both sound and vibe.
Prophecy is just the beginning of a new chapter for GOST and will undoubtedly open his music to new ears with open minded fans of extreme music of all forms will found much to love with the songs on here, and the epic nature of it all is a thing to marvel at.
This is the soundtrack to a veritable rave in hell with GOST at the controls doing what he does best, but in a much more majestically sublime way this time around. When they say that the devil has all the best tunes, the songs on Prophecy are exactly what they were talking about.
Rating: 8/10
