ALBUM REVIEW: Så kom mørket… – Morild
Deep within the mist tainted land of Copenhagen, Denmark you will find the mysterious black metal quintet, MORILD. Formed in 2016 they are due to release their debut album with a title that takes as long to read as the album takes to listen. They are clearly a very evocative and atmospheric band but are they revolutionary or downright dirty?
Så Kom Mørket Og Tog Mig På Ordet En Sort Sky Af Minder I Afgørende Stunder Frosset Fast I Mit Indre Jeg Håber Det Forsvinder Med Lyset At Dø Eller Blive Fri, or Så kom mørket… for brevity’s sake, opens with Så kom mørket…, which is about as ethereal an intro you can get, filthy and rotten with the stench of distortion it does a spectacular job of conveying the gritty emotion that laces what is to come. En sort sky af minder is strictly black metal fan only territory, beautiful to some yet a musical mess to others it is a crucial track that either encapsulates the listener or sends them running far away. Regardless of what the individual may subjectively take from this track it is well composed albeit murky as marshland and lyrically undecipherable.

I afgørende stunder is hands down exceptional atmospheric black metal in its purest most emotive form. Translating to “In crucial moments,” the song-writing expertly captures the emotion that is being conveyed from the title, something incredibly genius but which may pass unnoticed by black metal sceptics. Frosset fast i mit indre continues to sprout music from emotions in a grim yet significantly successful fashion. From soothing tremolo to furious blast beats intrinsic to black metal it captures the ideology of the track brilliantly – delving ever deeper into the darkest of thoughts frozen within the mind.
Jeg håber det forsvinder med lyset is more than just a stretched out interlude, its a fork in the road that the emotion-driven music so far has led up to. Will hope succeed with the coming of light or will dark memories stagnant yet stronger than ever control the direction of the sound? Masterfully interweaving hopeful connotations with an ominous and ever present darkness it is a final precursor to the last track At dø eller blive fri – To die or be free. A musical display of buoyant thoughts battling to survive against the malevolent memories long since spawned, MORILD solidify themselves as musical masters of atmospheric black metal.
For any fan of the genre, it is essential you listen to this evocative offering from MORILD. The reason for such a long title soon comes to mind after listening to the album in full, what seemed a tad ridiculous is actually very intelligent. Each track on the album conveys a section of the poetic title and thrives musically on the emotions that stem from it. Translated to “Thus came the darkness and took me by my word. A dark cloud of memories, In crucial moments, Frozen inside of me, I hope it disappears with the light, To die or become free” it is easier to understand the process of this rather commendable means of song-writing. That being said, Så kom mørket… doesn’t do much to introduce metal fans from outside the boundaries of atmospheric black metal fanatics but will prove to be a trove of treasure to those already enticed by it.
