ALBUM REVIEW: Songs From The Hard Shoulder – The Tangent
UK progressive rock outfit THE TANGENT have had a whole host of line-up changes throughout their tenure but despite this statistic they have continued to impress with their nostalgic blend of rock and jazz. Their latest effort Songs From The Hard Shoulder is now available via InsideOut Music and is set to further cement their storied legacy.
The Changes offers up an alluring mix of soothing, psychedelic tones that are layered meticulously throughout the ever-changing vocal work and instrumentation. The lyrical prose immediately immerses you in an accessible narrative that slickly glides along. The abundance of grooves and quirky hooks are a joy to watch unravel as the track traverses through varying forms of technicality and vibrancy.
The GPS Vultures lets the instruments do the talking, easing you in with a chilled jazz vibe that soon begins to pick up pace, introducing snappy drum patterns and flamboyant bass lines. The experimental, eccentric flair really comes to the forefront, keeping you guessing as to which road this track plans to venture down next. You do start to question whether a 17-minute instrumental track is capable of holding your attention throughout its entire duration but time seems to just evaporate and this is a testament to the sheer creative nature on display, even if it does descend into the obscure on numerous occasions.
The Lady Tied To The Lamp Post possesses a rather solemn, contemplative demeanour. Fragile vocals and a minimalistic instrumental accompaniment further amplify this sentiment. The lyrics are a stark reminder of how the world as you know it can be quite quickly tipped upside down and highlights the sheer lack of compassion for fellow humans who may not be as fortunate as yourself. The ebbing and flowing tempo assists in providing a dramatic, emotive soundscape.
Wasted Soul is significantly shorter than its colleagues but is still crammed with plentiful moods and sensations to digest. The upbeat, enticing beat lures you in with minimal effort. Bonus track In The Dead Of Night is a self-confessed medley of a tribute to the prog rock supergroup U.K. combined with THE TANGENT‘s own spin on things. This slots in well with the overall product and intended direction. As the track progresses it leans more into the unpredictable instrumental wizardry we’ve come to be acquainted with; whether it’s keyboards, guitars, bass or drum work, no stone is left unturned.
Songs From The Hard Shoulder might not be for everyone as it does delve into some rather unconventional stylings but for anyone who is a fan of the boundless creativity which the realm of progressive rock brings this should be right up your street. THE TANGENT have a knack for devising inviting melodies and personable lyrics which draw you in from the outset and will have you returning to further untangle the sheer diversity available within each piece.
