ALBUM REVIEW: The Mutiny – Molybaron
The Mutiny is the second album from MOLYBARON, and is due for release on May 21st. With a track-list of 10 powerful songs, the group have had the album prepped and ready for a while, with some lucky listeners having heard some songs as far back as 2019.
Frontman Gary Kelly floors listeners with his impressive range throughout The Mutiny. His voice, haunting and emotive, unleashes detailed narratives that not only portray his passion for meaningful music but also weave in raw, personal thoughts that are sure to draw in listeners. It is a talented display of vocal ability, with his voice reminiscent of the likes of AVENGED SEVENFOLD‘s M. Shadows.
Taking a different approach to that of their debut album, MOLYBARON successfully lead fans down a different path, with each band member laying down their own experiences into the tracks. Taking a back seat, the global issues that were tackled in their debut aren’t avoided, rather toned down. Songs instead focus on themes such as mental health. They manage to do this effortlessly, approaching the themes in a way which is relatable yet still able to get your feet stomping. And while some of these lyrics do touch on the darker shadows in life, when paired with the melodic riffs from guitarist Steven Andre, the songs come alive.
For the fans that have come to expect the politically-laden tracks, songs such as Animals cover this ground. Standout Prosperity Gospel tackles the area surrounding religion. The catchy chorus is a monster, and loud riffs spill throughout its entirety. The coarseness of Kelly‘s voice here combined with the modern rock hooks are dynamic. A true stroke of genius.
Tracks such as Lucifer and Something For The Pain are also explosive, with the former being one of singles from the discography. The alt-metal feel that the band manages to ooze throughout these, whilst still maintaining the crucial rock element, is incredibly impactful.
RockHard Magazine previously named MOLYBARON as the Best Discovery Act of 2017, and with their enviable talents as a group and ability to provide addictive material, its easy to see why. If the group continue in this vein, The Mutiny is sure to be a success for the dedicated fans and new listeners alike. So if you want to start your day right, go give it a listen. It’s sure to seduce you in no time.
