ALBUM REVIEW: The Seventh Sun – Bury Tomorrow
For many years BURY TOMORROW have been a firm favourite amongst the ranks of the thriving UK metal scene due to their admirable work ethic and determination in the face of adversity. When founding member Jason Cameron chose to depart from the band this really threw their future into a state of uncertainty. Despite this, admitting defeat has never been in their DNA and their impending release The Seventh Sun is a true testament to never surrendering. Due for release on March 31st via Music For Nations, this effort is poised to propel them to even greater heights.
The Seventh Sun sets the tone with intense aggression and crunchy riffing. Brief pockets of melody seep through the cracks but the plan of attack is all out groove assault. BURY TOMORROW are not here to exchange pleasantries, but to snap necks. Abandon Us follows suit with a powerful pacing. Emphatic drum work and fascinating atmospherics compliment the gritty growls of frontman Dani Winter-Bates. A monstrous breakdown sends a seismic shift through the soundscape. Begin Again opts for a more restrained but alluring approach of emotive tones whilst still retaining the sharp bite. The vibrant chorus line is guaranteed to go down a treat when hundreds of adrenaline-fuelled fans are hanging on every word. Forced Divide ups the ante with additional rounds of intricately layered riffs and surging waves of energetic instrumentation.
Boltcutter refuses to be outshone by its counterparts, keeping the momentum gushing in abundance. The dramatic, impassioned narrative will certainly get your blood pumping. Wrath unleashes a string of fret-weaving riff work that will have your head in a spin. Pulsing drum beats provide a rigid backbone for the unwavering explosions of energy. Majesty hits you right in the chest with its beautiful melodies and poignant sentiments – a moment to catch your breath and recharge from what has so far been a speeding bullet, boring holes in everything in its path. Heretic doesn’t let you get too comfortable, however, immediately ramping the tempo back up to terminal velocity. Just when you thought this track couldn’t become more impressive you’re welcomed by the enigmatic vocals of WHILE SHE SLEEPS talisman Loz Taylor to further supplement the frenzy.
Recovery instils a buoyant but contemplative mood, dishing out another powerhouse of a chorus segment. The brief spoken word elements have you firmly gripped on what proves to be a touching track. Care bursts open like a breached dam, hitting you head on with potent ferocity. A scintillating vocal performance will have you reeling at the sheer range on display. The Carcass King arguably saves the best for last, a rush of euphoria enters your bloodstream, giving you instant goosebumps. The silky smooth tones of Cody Frost provide the perfect accompaniment to one hell of a finale. Raw emotion, confidence, technicality, this track has it all in spades.
Whilst not to demerit their previous accomplishments this effort is something special. Just when you thought Cannibal was BURY TOMORROW‘s magnum opus, along comes The Seventh Sun, blowing it clean out of the water. From front to back, this set of tracks is an undeniable force of nature where not a single misstep is to be found. Every song has the quality to stand tall on its own accord but together they are a powder-keg ready to take the world by storm.
