ALBUM REVIEW: The Unseen – Klone
French progressive metal stalwarts KLONE have experienced an impressive evolution throughout their 25+ year career, becoming a formidable force that is widely respected around the world. November 8th signals the release of their illustrious tenth full-length album entitled The Unseen via the mighty Pelagic Records. Will this effort be the jewel in their already decorated crown?
Interlaced commences with graceful, relaxing melodies accompanied by punchy drum beats to add some flavour. Yann Ligner‘s signature vocal tone fits this style like a glove, immediately enhancing the soundscape. The sublime saxophone sequences which are introduced as the track progresses are the cherry on the cake. The Unseen continues the peaceful prose, allowing the instrumentation to glide along effortlessly. Prominent bass lines and touches of heaviness shine through the vibrant colours. Magnetic feels like if you were able to bottle the sensation of escapism. Serene vocal swathes seep into your ears with such comforting warmth.
After The Sun opts for a more melancholic approach, shimmering guitar work filters through the terrain as broad bass licks provide an extra dimension. Desire Line is also particularly evocative but it’s jazz-infused flow is remarkably alluring. The immersive mood whisk you away on their captivating journey. Slow Down does just that, drops the pace down a gear and lets the minimalistic methods work their magic. The soothing stylings may feel relatively straightforward in construction but are still packed with a variety of inviting shades and tones. Spring slowly sprawls into view but begins to introduce some intricate flourishes as it blooms. The instrumental combinations which are displayed prove to be addictively catchy as the lengthy track evaporates before your eyes. The second half may not have been entirely necessary but provides a haunting but intriguing means to bringing the release to a close.
The Unseen is a blissful collection of chapters which is the ideal medicine when you need a moment to recharge and soak up some melodies. KLONE may not have achieved huge levels of stardom but that by no means diminishes their songwriting qualities. Every component meshes together in harmony to showcase a beautiful array of musicianship that could be on continual loop and still not lose its charm. A wildcard which could definitely sneak its way into those fabled end of year lists.
