ALBUM REVIEW: Too Many Humans, Not Enough Souls. – Sunset Sons
The British-Australian band SUNSET SONS started their career as a cover band called THE CHEERLEADERS. They performed lots of shows – sometimes up to three a day – and played a wide variety of genres of music, from rock to hip-hop. All this laid the groundwork for the band they would become, who released their first album Very Rarely Say Die in 2016. They followed it up in 2018 with Blood Rush Déjà Vu, subsequently selling out the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire as a headline act, and now they arrive with their third album Too Many Humans, Not Enough Souls.
Comprising ten songs, Too Many Humans… is pleasant on the ears. Opening track Gonna Be A Way is a mid-tempo, guitar-driven song. It might not grab most people’s attention, but the ease of it makes it accessible for most people to listen to. There is a weird interlude on the bridge where the vocals are distorted, which feels out of place. But other than that, it is a great way to start the album.
Soul Destroyer continues the gentle, easy-going sound, creating a constant sound. However, things are mixed up a lot on the third song Rum And Coca Loca. It is a faster paced song, and it has a swing to it that makes it feel alive. This doesn’t affect the overall pacing of the album. Even though the original sound returns on Tonight, it feels like it fits in. Of course, this is their third album, so SUNSET SONS know what they are doing. They know their sound, and it shows on this album.
Sunny Funny Days is an interesting song. It is a mix of upbeat and mid-tempo. If it were made by a less confident band, this song wouldn’t work, but SUNSET SONS perfectly own the song. They embrace it as their own.
The rest of the album picks up speed. Smile is an upbeat song, but it is So We Oh that really picks things up. It is perhaps the most happy-go-lucky sounding song on the album. It is fun, and whilst it never goes full pop, it is a highlight of the album. This is because it uses the instruments really well. The drums carry the song, and they can be heard really clearly. Production-wise, this album is fantastic. All the songs are clear and stand out on their own. Furthermore, they all flow together, and there are no pacing issues. The lyrics speak of adventure, lost love and trying to step out of one’s comfort zone.
In conclusion, Too Many Humans, Not Enough Souls. is an album that is accessible and easy to listen to, but also calming. It is an album that one can fall back on in time of need, and would be an easy record to recommend to a friend if they wanted to get into SUNSET SONS. The production is fantastic on all the songs. This allows the songs to both stand as individual tracks, but also fit together seamlessly on the tracklist. SUNSET SONS know what direction they’re going it and it sounds fantastic.
