ALBUM REVIEW: Transcendence – Theraphosa
With the surging dominance of GOJIRA we have witnessed an influx of impressive french metal bands rising to prominence and a shining example is Parisian progressive outfit THERAPHOSA. After grabbing our attention with their self-titled EP release in 2018 they have been tirelessly working on their highly anticipated full length release. It is now time for the arrival of Transcendence which is due for release on April 24th via Season Of Mist. Will this release help bring them to the next level?
Stigmata Of The Purest Pain brings forth a wave of darkness with its jarring, sinister nature. Menacing growls lead the charge with emotive vocals being introduced to take the edge off the aggression. The Curse Of Chronos harbours an ominous vibe as rigid bass lines and an enticing pace set the tone. Under the surface the track packs a venomous bite. A gloomy atmosphere descends over Mother Night, combining with swarming instrumentation to heighten the intensity. As the track begins to gain momentum addictive guitar work lures you into its grasp. Soaring vocal passages are laced with passionate bursts of melody as vicious growls sneak from out of the shadows to send shivers down your spine.
Dies Irae takes the complexity up a notch as impressive guitar work assist in elevating the track. The uplifting energy brings a vibrant pallete to proceedings. Obsession boosts the tempo with buoyant, galloping riffs. The alluring chorus will undoubtedly become ingrained into your brain as the supporting bass lines expertly accompany the ongoing melodies. The Morning Star takes a different approach with a minimalistic structure in the early going. Atmospheric elements are added as it progresses with yet another addictive chorus line which comes bursting out of nowhere to pump some vigour into the track.
Attrition commences with an operatic choir and tempting tones. The powerful guitar work perfectly aligns itself with the hefty vocal lines. Stunning solo work gives you a shot of adrenaline straight to heart, amplifying the closing stages of the track. The Legacy Of Arachne lets the instruments do the talking for the final piece as it gears up for one further round of intensity. The dramatic, theatrical vibe boisterously marches forth to the thunderous drumming providing a splendorous end to this voyage.
THERAPHOSA have shown with this this release that they have a lot of feathers in their cap which allows for a captivating, diverse soundscape. Transcendence effortlessly blends heavy hitting riffs with engrossing vocals to bring forth a sense of euphoria as you progress through the tracks. The instrumentation has such an addictive quality that it will have you reaching for that replay button time and time again. The Parisian trio have cemented themselves as an exciting prospect to keep your eye on in the future.
