ALBUM REVIEW: Ulysses Trash – Dez Dare
Armed with an array of sounds that mix up heavy psych, fuzzy garage rock, lo-fi punk and stoner vibes with riffs by the truckload, DEZ DARE returns with irresistible new album Ulysses Trash, the follow up to his Hairline Ego Trip debut. While that album introduced the world to DEZ DARE, he shows off even more of his blissful and carefree musical finesse on this new album and is armed with a new arsenal of fuzzed out songs that are more than likely set to be a new set of anthems from the man himself.
DEZ DARE wastes no time in reintroducing himself in a flurry of lo-fi but high octane noise that spills out of the speakers from the get-go. From there, over the course of the album’s 13 tracks, he gives it his all and the results are inspiring. This is music perfect for hazy summer days and nights, and as the riffs and grooves fly by, it is more than easy to get taken away by it all. From the opening stomp of They Scream, My Head Is So Full I Can’t Dream all the way through to the closing maelstrom that is Rampage On Hi, Ulysses Trash, is above all else, a fun album, and nobody sounds like they are having as much fun as DEZ DARE himself.
Tracks like Tyrannosaurus Shake, Bloody Sea, Holy Fuck and Sweet (Exhaustion) are full of psyched out riffs and punk rock energy and sound like DEZ DARE is having the time on his life pumping them out. Other tracks on the album like Trashin’, Pomp and Claws are all aptly named as they sum up the spiky energy and flamboyant nature that DEZ DARE has in droves, and shows it off in full on this record.
This is a record that has all manner of twists and turns but retains a simplicity throughout and this is where the strength of the album lies. The simplicity is where the power comes alive and elevates the songs into catchy and memorable slices of noise. The album is packed full of discordant humour throughout and is typified by a song like Outrage, Metrics, Mechanics, Death and while some of this humour is not instantly obvious, it undoubtedly shines through when you get used to it.
DEZ DARE is a unique artist and his talent shines through with aplomb and he sounds like someone who is loving what they are doing and the music that they make. Ulysses Trash is a triumphant album that revels in its blissed out and riff filled glory and sees DEZ DARE reach new heights with his music, and long may he continue doing so. He has definitely found another winning formula with this album and the enthusiasm that the music emits is a welcome thing indeed.
