ALBUM REVIEW: Untrue – Black Sites
Progressive metallers BLACK SITES have built a solid foundation of releases since their arrival with 2017’s Monochrome. Hoping to push themselves further up the proverbial ladder they’ve just released their third full length effort, entitled Untrue, which is available now via self-release. What do the band have in store for us this time round?
Sword Of Orion gears up for battle with a pounding drum beat combining with energetic melodies. Once the instrumentation is firmly embedded the vocal lines slot seamlessly into the arrangement to complete the inviting soundscape. The upbeat tempo sets a positive mood and gets the momentum into full swing. Call It By Its Name ups the dramatic intensity and injects some alluring tones to grab your attention. Proficient lead work and thought provoking lyrical content intertwine to form an enticing combo. Lost Tribes possesses a dark and gloomy nature whilst still maintaining the captivating melodic elements. The dynamic riffs and powerful vocal work are incredibly invigorating, building your enthusiasm for what the remainder of this release may have in store.
Echo Of A Lie takes a more free flowing and experimental approach as it transitions between a variety of moods and tempos. The diverse layering provides an enthralling experience as each stage of the track unfolds, allowing you to just sit back and be immersed in the array of exhilarating instrumentation on offer. The Worst Of Us ups the ante with swift riff segments and a confident, commanding stride. The crunchy heaviness in the guitar work instills an added bite to proceedings. Nocturne Everything Went Black adopts a solemn tone and graceful, emotive vocals to deliver its message. The energy levels rise as the track progresses and a sinister vibe springs forth.
They Eat Their Young follows suit, containing a similarly dark edge which only makes the piece more engaging and lively. The galloping riffs and thunderous drum work are like an instant adrenaline rush topped off with a mesmerising solo flourish. After that sudden burst of euphoria White Ashes firmly grounds you as its emotional demeanour and methodical pace bring a sense of realism to the table. Whilst its seriousness means the album departs on a relatively bleak note it is still an impressive performance befitting of a closing piece.
Despite the fact that the members of BLACK SITES had to record their individual parts separately, Untrue has a remarkable sense of cohesion and has the feeling of a collective live performance which is a true testament to the care and consideration poured into this release. The abundance of styles and moods provide a varied tapestry to digest but also feel part of the same unified arrangement which is no easy feat to achieve. A very impressive outing for the American trio.
