Asylums announce new album ‘Genetic Cabaret’
ASYLUMS have announced a new album!
Titled Genetic Cabaret, the upcoming album from the band follows 2018’s Alien Human Emotions and is scheduled to be released in July this year, via Cool Thing Records.
Towards the end of 2019, in the privacy of a world-class studio with legendary recording engineer and sound alchemist Steve Albini [In Utero by NIRVANA, Rid Of Me by PJ Harvey, Surfa Rosa by PIXIES], the band recorded the new album. Whilst recording, the band split their time between Chicago, whose big honest soul superseded the garish horrifying pantomime of Trump’s America, Norway and Germany, where Brexit shame was temporarily suppressed like a bad nightmare.
Speaking about the upcoming album, guitarist/vocalist Luke Branch says, “Genetic Cabaret was written during the most turbulent time I’ve ever experienced socially and politically in the UK. I’d stay up late every night binge-watching the news and political punditry and write songs all day. During writing and rehearsals, my wife fell pregnant and the huge emotional impact of that got me thinking about the world I was bringing our child into from a new perspective. I examined political history, human biology, generational divides and emerging technology in equal measure. The resulting album feels leaner musically, harder-edged and with anger and empathy in equal measure.”
Alongside the announcement of the new album, ASYLUMS have released a new music video from the upcoming record; for the track A Perfect Life In A Perfect World. Speaking about the new song, Branch continues, “the sentiment of A Perfect Life In A Perfect World has taken on a different meaning for me over the last month or so which has led to us deciding to release it now. Originally it was about my own struggles with low moods and not always living in the moment, thinking about how life could be all the time. Now during this period of uncertainty and profound challenge for the country and the world it feels more like a song about the future, a song about how we might want to conduct ourselves after this period of isolation and reflection. I hope very much that centres around kindness, community, creativity and compassion.”
