EP REVIEW: A Desolate Warning – Noah And The Loners
Up and coming punk band NOAH AND THE LONERS are on the cusp of releasing their debut EP A Desolate Warning. The EP itself serves as a reminder of the young band’s opinions on the world of politics, growing up, adolescence and the frustrations of not being heard by the older generations. It screams out that they’re here and they’re not going to be quiet.
To kick things off the band launch straight into Crash Landing, an immediately fast punk track in which you can hear both modern and classic influences. On the one hand, you can imagine the likes of the SEX PISTOLS performing this back in the late 70s, yet at the same time you can easily picture NOAH AND THE LONERS themselves performing this to an energetic crowd. In short, they might be inspired by other bands, but they refuse to copy them. And more than anything, it’s the perfect angry track that you need for when you’re ready to start a riot.
This energy continues throughout the short but sweet EP. Following track Just Kids opens with an awesome bassline before the full band joins in with lyrics that capture their perspective on the frustrations of growing up. The only track where things do slow down somewhat is You Make Me (Fall Apart), a rather chill (in comparison to the other songs) punk track that remains slow during the verses but then picks up as soon as the choruses hit with the intensity building up over time.
Next up is Losing My Head that marks a return to loud punk with energetic instruments and anthemic lyrics that go over mental health struggles and the dark thoughts one may have to deal with. In summary, it’s an angry song for sad thoughts, while to close out the record is the fun and slightly tongue-in-cheek track Hell Of A Day, which just recounts a purely bad day that leaves you frustrated. And, well, you know that the best therapy is a loud song to get the anxieties and anger out.
NOAH AND THE LONERS may only just be starting out, but they’ve made a statement here and they are an exciting force in the modern punk era. A short and sweet EP that leaves you wanting more, equally short but sweet tracks that are pure carnage, and delicious chemistry and energy – what more could you want?
Rating: 8/10
