EP REVIEW: A Storm Lined With Silver – Vower
Following on from the previous formula Apricity, pedigree supergroup VOWER, unleash an ascension into entirely new echelons with latest release, A Storm Lined With Silver.
Forged from the shadows of BLACK PEAKS, PALM READER and TOSKA, VOWER were always vowed to be nothing short of exceptional. A convergence of musical prowess that demand attention from the first note. But, to continue their transcendence, A Storm Lined With Silver needed to make a leap – and it did.
Powerful, progressive and poignant, the six tracks on the EP hit the heart-strings just as hard as your ear-drums. Josh McKeown’s vocals continue to be flawless, shifting delicately between vulnerable to full-throttle intensity. Meanwhile, Rabea Massaad’s intricate guitar work and production weave everything together, cohesively binding each element of the band.
The record opens with Dawn On Me, clocking in at nearly six minutes. More a statement than a song, McKeown’s smooth delivery gently draws you in before erupting into soaring, untamed rage, showing their elevation while staying dynamic and unexpectedly comforting, a feeling of being home.
Deadweight follows, a masterclass in groove and melody. Balancing complexity and catchiness, its rolling flow is additive, blending technical kicks with a chorus that lingers long after the track ends. Less floaty, but just as sultry, track Satellites exhibits VOWER‘s tech abilities, another layer to the band’s already plentiful sound.
Beneath the thunder of drums and the lattice of riffs, A Storm Lined With Silver is deeply emotive. There’s an undercurrent of raw humanity running through its prowess. Moth Becomes the Flame in particular contrasts sophisticated, almost fragile vocal moments against rampant instrumental energy, poetically jarring and goosebump inducing. Musically, the EP is intense, but emotionally it packs the biggest punch.
Across the EP, VOWER showcase their variance without ever losing cohesion. The foundation is tight and engrained, but each track brings its own flare. The result feels effortless, as if they had rolled out of bed, picked up their instruments and nailed it on the first take. There’s no gimmicks, no egos, just confidence and chemistry. One small step for metal, one giant leap for VOWER.
Rating: 8/10
