EP REVIEW: Antidote – Greywind
After a long wait, Irish emo-rock duo GREYWIND have finally released their latest EP Antidote. The brother and sister duo have had an interesting time in the music industry; they released their debut album Afterthoughts back in 2017, but only recently gained the rights back to the record, and just in time too. With a growing following and explosion on TikTok, support slots for artists like PALAYE ROYALE and AS DECEMBER FALLS, and now feeling more confident than ever in who they are, they are ready to take the next step.
An ongoing theme that carries throughout the record is a feeling of hope, despite some dark moments and thoughts of giving up. Opening the EP is Swing And Sway, a track that starts out with a grungy sounding guitar before the full band kicks off into an emo-rock song that beautifully blends both nostalgic and modern sounds. Its beautiful melody combined with the melancholic mood, that still manages to be uplifting, feels rather cinematic.
Following this the duo move into the title track that sounds a little more upbeat, yet realistic, with a style that feels reminiscent of MAYDAY PARADE. Once again, there is that effortless blend of the old and new, more specifically in the world of emo/pop-punk where GREYWIND are able to capture human emotions of being frustrated. In a slight contrast, the record then moves into Glimmer that, while still moody, is a bit more upbeat with its catchy guitar and pop melodies.
Deathwish, however, switches things back into the world of dramatic, cinematic sounds that capture the essence of anger where one can image a crowd of people screaming back the lyrics as they too go through similar motions. And with a solid guitar breakdown, it’s the perfect example of an angry song for sad people. Finishing things off is the concluding track You’re My Medicine. With elements that draw comparison to AGAINST THE CURRENT, the lyrics beautifully summarise the theme of being in a dark place yet hope remains in that things will get better.
Antidote is the mark of new, exciting beginnings for GREYWIND, cementing their place in the modern emo-rock scene. It wouldn’t be surprising if in years to come they become a band that inspire many more artists. Dramatic sounds, beautiful lyrics, and powerful vocals – there’s not much else you could ask for here.
