EP REVIEW: Apparition Day – Hypermass
Norwegian progressive metallers HYPERMASS announced themselves on the world stage in impressive fashion with the release of full length debut Empyrean in 2022 with comparisons being made to riff titans SYLOSIS and GOJIRA – high praise indeed. As a result of their achievements they were snapped up by Seek & Strike and have recently released the eagerly awaited follow-up EP, entitled Apparition Day which is available now. Can they continue their promising ascent?
Supernova Collective immediately slots into the groove, quite literally. Potent drum sequences, dextrous lead work, and energetic vocal bursts pack a serious punch. If you’re looking to be submerged in a torrent of neck-snapping riffs then this is just what the doctor ordered! Cult Vendor possesses a confident, polished stride. Plentiful buoyancy flows effortlessly throughout as crunchy heaviness meets enticing melodies.
Neovortex brings forth the shred. Complex fret gymnastics will leave your head in a spin. Headcase maintains the flamboyant technicality in captivating fashion. Invigorating hooks spew forth at a swift rate, displaying remarkable flair. A Perfect Imbalance brilliantly blends light and dark textures into a gritty but euphoric offering. Hefty rhythms and rapid-fire drum beats ensure this effort departs on an emphatic note.
It is easy to see why HYPERMASS have received such acclaim. Ludicrously talented musicianship is sprinkled liberally across the runtime of Apparition Day as it leaves you desperately clambering for the replay button. The production is razor-sharp enabling every nuance to be fully appreciated in this colossal whirlwind. A thoroughly compelling effort.
