EP REVIEW: Black Math Horseman – Black Math Horseman
Emerging once again from the fog of time and memory, and after 13 long years away, Los Angeles psychedelic post-metal band BLACK MATH HORSEMAN return with a thrilling self-titled EP. Carrying on the narrative the band established their debut album Wyllt, the EP is a journey into the centre of humanity’s inner darkness. The central protagonist of this is the Black Math Horseman, and this is where the character comes into full bloom with their mysterious black math. Yet the root of the record is all about overcoming adversity and reaching a place of inner harmony that you have not felt before. This emotional intricacy is woven into rich, atmospheric music that takes you on a long voyage through the darkness and into the light.
Meant to be listened to as one single conceptual piece, the EP is a triumphant return for a band that many believed had unfinished business when they departed those many moons ago. It is as if that they have never been apart; everything sounds tight and purposeful. BLACK MATH HORSEMAN are a strong example that those who have chemistry together will never really lose it despite the passing of time and the changes that accompany it.
Masters of eerie atmospheres and bewitching melodies, a clandestine beauty transcends the EP, with its full force culminating in The Bough before hauntingly fading out with Cypher. The EP is all about clarity, and as you move through its shadows, flirting with the bright lights that guide you, the moment of purest clarity hits hard and changes you.
BLACK MATH HORSEMAN have crafted a stunningly gorgeous EP and woven their mesmeric magic throughout. With celestial vocals and aggressive riffing augmenting the complex emotional journey, you experience so much within such a short space of time. It is a triumphant return and then some.
