EP REVIEW: blue transitions – The Hunna

Alternative rock trio, THE HUNNA, have made their return with their newest EP, blue transitions. The EP itself, in the band’s own words, “is a set of powerful, melancholic songs taking a deeper look into the transformations and changes that occur naturally in life between two individuals.” One could say a commentary on a relationship where we follow events that one moment are happy, the next more bittersweet. An accurate representation that many of us will experience in our own lives.

Starting things out is the high energy hide & seek that brings in classic rock riffs with upbeat pop melodies that, while a little cliché and corny, are nostalgic and feel-good. It brings you back to a time when you were a teenager hanging out in your bedroom with music playing in the background. A time where you are carefree and everything feels possible. Yet the happy times fade away when we move into the acoustic bloom where the opening notes have the potential to be either sweet or bittersweet as lyrics explore a story of saying goodbye and reminiscing on a past relationship. Maybe it’s up to you to decide if this is something to be mourned or not.

The gentleness carries on into tough love where the opening notes of twinkly like piano blend into an alternative rock track that feels straight of 2014 Tumblr days where things are moodier. Admittedly, while it sounds fine, it feels rather uninteresting as a track that’s more just, well, there as opposed to trying to say something. But things quickly move on when we get to clouds that wakes you up from the previous track with the loud high energy with it’s fusion of grunge meets alternative rock. And we’re also treated to a pretty dream-pop section that feels like we’re floating amongst the clouds.

Closing things out is the title track itself where we shift back into a moody scene with a solid alternative rock composition that acts as a strong statement to close on. blue transitions is a decent EP that signifies the start of an upcoming era for THE HUNNA and one to get us hyped for a potential, longer release.
