EP REVIEW: Body Is Reality – Pulse

Metalcore quintet PULSE have been making some big moves, performing alongside the likes of VEXED, SUNFALL, and DEFENCES as well as breaking out of the UK to perform at Czech Republic’s Fajtfest. 2025 is looking to be a marquee year for the band, announcing their appearance at Mangata Festival as well as recently dropping their latest effort Body Is Reality.

Burial Ground explodes into action with hefty grooves and monstrous vocal bursts. The combination of intensity and feverish energy levels provides an immediate rush of adrenaline envisioning wall-to-wall bodies losing their minds experiencing this in a live environment. Disengagement keeps the momentum surging forward with jarring riff work alongside crisp, snappy drum beats. Ominous synth accompaniments add another dimension of menace to proceedings. The newly recruited INGESTED frontman Josh Davies also offers his venomous vocal talents. The buoyantly bludgeoning The Perfect Gene possesses dangerously addictive hooks that will tear your limbs off if you get too close. Crazed drumming sequences supplement the ongoing carnage.

Silver Skies takes a completely different approach, opting for harmonious melodies and electronic experimentation. The silky smooth vocal work courtesy of Chloe Cuthbert bears a brief respite from the savagery. Fall To Despair cleverly intertwines the light and dark elements, melding ferocious rhythmic barrages with a euphoric chorus section. Grey Matter ups the anarchy, punishing drum work and swarming instrumentation create a combustible soundscape sparked by a commanding vocal performance by frontman Thom Gardner.

Desire is armed with an enticing tempo packed with a mix of crushing heaviness and soaring vibrancy. The closing segments may induce severe cases of whiplash. Reqiuem opts for a peaceful, ethereal tone, allowing your mind and body to fathom the whirlwind encountered throughout this journey. Body Is Reality masterfully has you teetering on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. It shifts its attack at exactly the right moments to ensure you daren’t blink for fear of missing something exciting. PULSE have firmly established their identity with this release, offering a fresh perspective to the genre.

Rating: 8/10
