EP REVIEW: Bring Out Your Dead – Chandrian Kill
Melodic metal duo CHANDRIAN KILL debut their EP Bring Out You Dead. With a contemplative theme of life, self-awareness and human consciousness, the pair aim to push a compact, concise and consistently engaging experience.
I Collide starts bright and fresh with its guitar work, sparky drums filling the space with a light bounce and energy. The duel use of clean and screamed vocals adds a nice texture, with leads into the harder hitting, more technically diverse chorus. There’s a lot of great effects at work that really pumps the song between a very open, airy feeling into a thumping, commanding side of the band. With a strong ending, you’re teased with the promise of more electronica infused goodness.
Filter Off is a swelling, chunky song with another promising awareness of pressure and release. The track constantly builds it bassy guitars and slow, melodic drums, then evaporating into delicate little riffs and whispered lyrics, all before unleashing a more ferocious beast. There are some great djent sounds popping in and out, that really compliment the harshest vocals. There is a lot of sway in this track, much like the initial number on this EP, that directs an emotional response. Nothing takes the limelight for too long, demonstrating a diverse pool of ideas that CHANDRIAN KILL have in their roster and could develop further down the line.
All too soon, we’re at final track Remain Alive which thrusts itself upon you in a calm, confident drum intro, building up its guitars and finally giving way to its vocals. This is the most, for want of a better word, beautiful song on this release. It’s a torrent of subtle changes in sound; a wash of reverberated melodies, a strong and honest vocal performance, a downpour of great beats and constant key changes and time changes. Before you’ve even realised it, the gentle beginnings have blossomed into a full on mosh-out chant along that will have your head banging and captivate your heart.
CHANDRIAN KILL bring Nic Whitmore and Ted Clark’s experience and hone it into a perfect blend of emotional, commanding music. A triumphant first release, Bring Out Your Dead explores not only complex themes, but packs a punch with its genre bending and technical experimentation.
