EP REVIEW: Call Me Amour – Call Me Amour
Even before CALL ME AMOUR formed, their individual resumes were impressive to say the least. Individually, the band have played in venues such as Brixton Academy, festivals such as Download Festival, and even performed in the West End musical Wicked, alongside touring with the likes of PAPA ROACH and LIMP BIZKIT. Years after the band members walked away from their individual journeys, the friendships and admiration for each other’s musical abilities, CALL ME AMOUR formed, blending guitars with electronic elements and earning a rapidly growing fanbase. Now the band are back with their five track self-titled EP.
Happy Hell is a riotous start to the album, full of catchy choruses and brutal guitar riffs. Whilst the electronic side of the music doesn’t appear until the final minute of the song, it doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the song. Instead, it helps ease the listener into the band’s music. Bloom leans more into the electronic side of the band, especially during the verses. BLEED FROM WITHIN vocalist Scott Kennedy features on the track, his voice complimenting with the band’s sound and Harry Radford (vocals). Mikey Chapman (MALLORY KNOX) features on Good Day, an upbeat song that leans into the rock side of CALL ME AMOUR. Where’s The Chemistry continues the upbeat rock, whereas closing song Dreams is a slower paced rock song with some electronic music mixed in to create a blend that doesn’t dilute either genre.
Whilst each song having its own sound might sound like a recipe for disaster, it works for CALL ME AMOUR. Even though the final three songs embrace the rock genre, they take different approaches to rock music that makes them individual, such as having an upbeat heavy rock song that verges on post-hardcore, and then a slower, more radio-friendly track. Although the electronic side of the band isn’t explored as much, what is there works well with the rock elements thanks to the production. It makes sure that the two genres don’t overwhelm each other.
Overall, CALL ME AMOUR‘s self-titled EP is a triumph. The band sound brilliant and the two features add to the songs, but also don’t take away from CALL ME AMOUR‘s talent. Whilst it would’ve been great to hear more of the electronica side of the band as what is heard sounds very interesting, their embrace of the rock side of their music is great. The production helps balance out the two genres when the electronica makes an appearance so that there is no overlap. CALL ME AMOUR have a big year ahead of them, and this EP is just the start.
