EP REVIEW: Closure – As Everything Unfolds
The UK rock and metal scene is on absolute scorching form right now. From the mirky depths of it’s booming black metal scene, breakout successes stories of CONJURER or DREAM STATE, to scene front-runners like ARCHITECTS, we are indeed living in a golden age for heavy music. Hoping to grab a slice of the pie, AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS arrive with Closure; a five track EP that certainly impresses.
With a run-time of just 16 minutes, Closure is certainly a short offering from AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS but it is oh so sweet. 17:10 kicks the record off in fine fettle as riffs from Adam Kerr and Owen Hill soar and the underlying synths from Jon Cassidy add a neat level of depth to their sound. Vocalist Charlie Rolfe makes an instant impression as her vocals ebb and flow from soft melodies to chaotic shrieks. A fine start to the record indeed.
Speaking of Charlie Rolfe, she is the shining star on Closure as her vocal deliveries are nothing short of excellent. Her gorgeous and, at times, emotional lead vocal lines in Despondency make an instant connection and the chorus of Divided, which demonstrates Rolfe‘s best work on the entire EP, packs hooks aplenty. Full of swagger, bounce and melody, there is real quality on offer here, one which only enhances the band’s impact.
The vocals are clearly the standout characteristic to AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS‘ sound, but the other elements are more than passable, certainly enough to hold your attention. Delicate and intricate guitar lines break up the hard-hitting riffs on final track Centuries and the splashes of atmospherics utilised across the record help keep you immersed in the more emotive passages.
With Closure, AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS present a nice appetiser into where this band are headed moving forward. Tight and compact with some incredible vocal work, the band have displayed enough here to warrant your attention. Whilst short, and indeed that is the record’s biggest shortcoming, there is more than enough on offer here to build momentum for this promising outfit.
Rating: 8/10
