EP REVIEW: Copenhagen Closure – Afterlove

AFTERLOVE is Mirza Radonjica‘s passion project. The SIAMESE vocalist created a mini-album of songs that were done in almost a single take each, and full of ideas and raw energy. He decided to tear up the rulebook when it comes to song writing, and chose to make the process less stressful. Teaming up with Zac Allen from IF NOT FOR ME, Zack Baker of RAIN CITY DRIVE and Luka Rozaka of TEN56. to help create the mini-album, the result is Copenhagen Closure, a seven-track with no inhibitions and a strong love of music.

Afterlove the song opens the EP. With a fantastic blend of synths and guitars that occasionally get subdued by the vocals, it still packs a punch and introduces a new side to Radonjica. In fact, the synths continue into Shape of My Mind. It features Swedish metalcore band BITE DOWN, who add a much-needed edge to the song, otherwise it would end up sounding musically similar to the previous song.

Thankfully, things change as the EP continues. House of Glass focuses on the heavier side of AFTERLOVE, whilst managing to make sure that it doesn’t overwhelm the vocals. This continues into Industry Dreams, a short, guitar-driven song that unfortunately ends abruptly just as it gets going. However, The Humbling manages to get things back on track by focusing on the synth-rock of the opening songs, with more emphasis on the rock side by bringing out guitars and drums. The final two songs, The Cure For Dying Alone and Løvehjerte continues the synth-rock sound that has dominated the EP.

Whilst it’s great that AFTERLOVE has stuck to a particular sound that makes the EP sound coherent, it also doesn’t help it sound distinctive. The songs all follow the same formula, apart from the few songs in the middle that change up the sound by focusing on rock music. This is a shame because vocally, the EP is very impressive and AFTERLOVE has a great voice, which makes it a joy to listen to.

Overall, Copenhagen Closure is a good EP. It’s fun to listen to and it’s coherent. AFTERLOVE has a clear passion for the music, and his voice sounds brilliant. However, whilst it’s great that he’s worked on an EP with a change to make it less stressful the issue is that sonically, the EP is quite formulaic, with the majority of the songs being stuck in the stagnate of synth-rock. Whilst a few songs in the middle break away from this formula, it’s unfortunately not enough to make the EP stand out enough in an already crowded genre.
