EP REVIEW: Desecration – Ifreann

The scene in Edinburgh has been going from strength to strength with the likes of DISPOSABLE and DOG TIRED proudly flying the flag. It is now time for their compatriots IFREANN to release their follow up to 2019’s Unearthly EP entitled Desecration which is available now via self-release. Will this effort help give them that nudge up the ladder?

Of Blade & Blackened Wing dives headfirst into crunchy thrash riffing and boisterous screams. Dual guitar melodies unite to offer up an intriguing blend of styles and impressive solo segments help compliment this offering. Raised In Hate lets burly bass lines lead the way as the tension begins to build. Further instances of sharp shredding are introduced alongside a bouncy, methodical tempo. The vibrant solo work cuts through the darker rhythm tones.

Messiah maintains the swift riffing as frontman Ian Gil‘s vocal work bellows over the track. Impressive groove is exhibited which is guaranteed to get those heads banging. Crushed By Tyranny harbours the momentum built up by its predecessors and continues the thrash assault. Proficient drum fills enhance the track as they coincide with the intricate lead pieces.

Whilst not reinventing the wheel Desecration provides an enjoyable, solid slab of old school thrash metal. IFREANN certainly have talent at their disposal to write inviting hooks and drizzle them with skillful solo flourishes, this material will serve them well when they hit the road and help bolster their already promising catalogue.
